Sally Ride sparks posthumous debate on coming out

  • Pioneering astronaut Sally Ride, who relished privacy, chose an appropriately discreet manner of coming out.

At the end of an obituary that she co-wrote with her same-sex partner, they disclosed to the world their relationship of 27 years.

As details trickled out after Ride's d......

    FYI.

If she wrote about it, I might as well share it.

The serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.

  • We lost a great, classy American in Sally Ride.

    RIP

  • Good for her.

I think those criticizing her for not coming out earlier are off-base. She made tremendous achievements in a very traditional, straight-laced and male-dominated culture. Coming out at the time may have made those achievements impossible, for better or worse.

I am all for people being honest with and about themselves, but sexuality is only one aspect of a person and I don't think we have to say that all else should suffer for the sake of being honest and open about that one aspect.

It is a personal decision. Clearly she maintained a relationship for 27 years, she was not in the closet.

Whether one makes a public announcement, or not, is purely up to them.

Personally, I am happy that she kept it quiet, otherwise, people would have qualified her achievements as being a Lesbian, when they deserve to stand on their own.

    I like this.

Ive never been faced with a choice of that magnitude, so I cant really say if I am happy she did it or not. She chose to keep it under wraps, as that must have been best for her life/lifestyle. But i can appreciate deet's comment about the sad fact that had she done so...all too many people would have categorized her and her accomplishments.
