Report:Lakers trying to get first-round pick, eyeing Baylor duo

  • After trading away two first round drafts the Lakers want to a first round pick. If Jim Buss wants Perry Jones III and Quincy Miller. he should buy a pick from a team late in the first round pick instead of trying to trade for the pick. Portland bought a first round draft pick for $ 3 million dollars and the New York Knicks bought a first round pick from the Lakers for $ 3 million. Jim Buss is too cheap to pay for a pick.

I still think Houston makes the most sense if he wants to trade for two picks for both players. Houston has the 14th and 16th picks in the draft. If the Lakers can trade Pau Gasol and maybe Ramon Sessions for Kyle Lowry, Kevin Martin, and the two first round picks they should do it.

Good point mrsam. Kobe ain't getting any younger. Last season was a complete waste of his time.

  • Perry Jones could be a way better Lamar Odom or maybe even a KD lite if they let him play at SF.

Seems like the Lakers want Perry Jones III alot. I would rather take Michael Beasley and Derrick Williams.

Being shortsighted and cheap is how the team got into this mess. The Lakers as composed right now aren't competing for championships and they can't maneuver much to improve the team with so few tradable assets unless they trade Bynum. A rookie can help us win now and if he turns into someone great, he can extend Kobe's window. Rondo was playing a major role in the Celtics winning by his 2nd year and has kept the Celtics window open a lot longer than it should have been.

To the OP, buying picks is a thing of the past now. With the new CBA, you can send only $3M back all year in trades instead of $3M being the limit per trade. The Lakers should have never traded away a 1st to Houston to take Fishers contract.

Additionally, the last couple of year before the CBA change, the Lakers should have been the team buying picks instead of selling them. It was shortsighted and frugal management by the Lakers. Get young cheap players who can be used in trades or allow you not to overpay to resign your own players.

I don't think they'll have to give up gasol to get jones or miller. The last mock I saw had perry jones go 15th and Quincy miller go late first. All it should take is a young player or our 2nd and some cash (Lamar odom tpe) as teams want to avoid paying guaranteed money to a first rounder.

Lakers don't have a young asset that a team wants for a 1st round. As I explained earlier, the Lakers can only include $3M in all there trades per NBA season and aren't going to be sending out all their cash in trade for a 1st round pick. Odom's TPE just means the Lakers can take back salary without sending some out.

Really, the only way Lakers can get a 1st is if they take back a bad salary in exchange for it.

This. The Lakers are thin, old and overpaid because they do a crap job with their draft picks and have to compensate by making bad trades and FA signings.

The price we are paying for 3 straight title runs. Might have another few smush parker/kwame brown years before we make another run at it with a revamped team. Just the way it goes.

I know Deron Williams wants to play for the Brooklyn Nets or Dallas Mavericks. The Lakers have no chance with him. I think you mistaken my post. I wrote Derrick Williams, the number two pick from last NBA Draft. He plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lakers were considering trading Pau Gasol last year for the number two pick. I would rather the Lakers get Michael Beasley and Derrick Williams since both are young players.

Got it. I'm sorry -- you were perfectly clear and I completely brain farted and read Deron, instead of Derrick.

  • Houston just traded for the 18th pick. The Houston Rockets have the 14th, 16th, and 18th pick. Rumors are they will trade these picks with Kyle Lowry to get the 5th and 8th pick to get Dwight Howard.

If the Rockets cannot get Dwight Howard I think they trade some of the picks to the Lakers for Pau Gasol. If the Lakers can get two picks it will help them. If the Lakers can save money it will be important.

  • How do the salary matching requirements come into play when you trade a player for a pick?
