This sounds more complicated and requiring more commitment to stay up with the characters and plot than 'LOST'.... whew ... a lot going on ... biggrin

it is way more involved than Lost. Hell it is five books and about 5000 pages of info. There are literally thousands of Characters named, some in passing, some major players. Even major players can disappear from the story for a couple thousand pages with no mention. To complicate things many characters are known by many names at different points (aliases, titles...). In addition there are many locations that are fully fleshed out with a complex geography and different regions being known for different things. There are different religions to keep up with too.

It is very complex, Tolkien is a good comparison for complexity. The TV Show is streamlined from what the books contained. I think watching the first season made it easier to follow the rest f the books.

To add to what you wrote....

The fact that events that happened about 17-20 years before the start of the first book are as important as anything that actually happens during the series adds another level of complexity and mystery.

    Interesting you guys.
Sounds like sock puppets on here with the different names and aliases.
So the first book starts out without revealing the previous 17 years of history which I assume is then backfilled as the remaining 4 books get laid out. I like that. It is kind of like real life as we meet a person and then learn their history as we get to know them better.
From the interview video of the actor player "King slayer or killer" I can see that there is tension with him and the other dude who was in Lord of the Rings.
Are these two guys protagonist through the whole series and in the end like with Harry Potter and Voldemort one must die and the other gets the throne which I assume is what this is all about: being King?
I may try to get this in an e-book format and read it on my computer, sounds like something I could get into.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Outsider,

I would definetly recommend checking out the series. It's as involved and multi-faceted as any other series that I've ever read.......and I do a great deal of reading.

Regarding an E-Book, I would strongly suggest buying the actual books. There is a whole lot of flipping back and forth between previously read chapters, maps, and appendicies that might be awkward with an e-reader. You can find the paper backs being sold at just about any grocery or drug store for about $9.00.

As to your question about protagonists.........there are *no true protagonists in this story. There are also really no **"good guys" or "bad guys" in this series.

*Bran Stark could be considered a true protagonist....on some level.

**That statement only refers to living humans in the series.

nothing wrong with the e-book. Hell, the damn books are so long, there were times I wished I had an ebook rather than holding the too thick and heavy published volumes. The paperbacks are in small print and on very thin paper that leads to pages sticking together which drove me nuts.

The shift in perception of some of the characters is perhaps the greatest accomplishments in Martin's writing. You go from hating characters to pulling for them in a number of unique arches.

Outsider, it would be doing you a great disservice to tell you anything about the fates of the characters you ask about.

    Absolutely perfectly stated!

What you have written isn't limited to characters that are alive and present at the time in which the events depicted in the series take place. Characters that have been dead (and remain dead) for 20 years can go from looking like an absolute monster..................to looking like great heroes, depending on who is telling that dead persons story.

  • I've ordered the first four books on e-book site.
I can use a larger font and not have to hold the book up for hours as once I get into a series I do not put it down.
I read the 7 Harry Potter books 3 times.
You guys may be seeing me less on here for awhile ....
I am pumped to get started.

Edit: $30 for first four volumes ... about $10 each ... paperback prices

Enjoy! I hope that you will not be disappointed.

You mention that you've read teh 7 Harry Potter books 3 times. I do the same thing with great books. I've read the first 3 books in George Martin's series at least 4 times. I've read the 4th book 3 times. I'm currently on my 2nd reading of the 5th book.

The fun thing about this series is that with each reading, I notice something new and different...............and that leads to the "conspiracy" type conversations that RB, Ruff, and myself have had on this thread. It really is a lot of fun.

That is what I am looking forward to, dissecting the plot and characters, I love it when an author creates a new world.

Right now I am in correspondence to work out a technical matter downloading the books to my computer.
I should have it resolved by tonight.

If you pound out the first two books quick you will be ready to watch the new season of he HBO show. I actually saw the first season before reading the books and it did not destroy the enjoyment of the books. In fact I would recommend watching season one as soon as you finish the first book because it certainly will help you keep track of the many names and places involved. Indeed, if you get too bogged down in book one watch the show and it will get you going again.

Season two starts April 1, The seasons align with the books (at least so far). If you are a 'reader', and I assume you are based on your wanting to take on a 6000 page work and the fact you own an e-reader, you should be able to finish the first two in time to start watching season two in two weeks. Enjoy.

Martin certainly has done that. It is a world that is both familiar and foreign at the same time. You really do get a feeling for the different cultures, religions, and geography in his world.

Cstory over simplified when he said no real good guys or bad guys. Clearly there are, but there are also a wealth of morally grey characters and morally evolving characters that challenge your early concepts of their character.

Sam is a good character. Gregor Clegane is clearly bad as are his men. There are plenty of examples.

  • I'm on page 76 ... I cannot tell you all the names off the top of my head but I am getting the feel of who these characters are.
I like Ned although he killed the guy with no ears I liked in the introduction.
He seems to be a good guy with a good wife and family.
I like the dire wolves the kids all got.
Jon Snow is a cool character as well as his half sister Ayra, both of whom I predict play major roles in this drama.
I can see a struggle setting up with Jon and the Knight Watch with those warriors in the first chapter to the north of the wall that seemed to have camouflage clothing and weapons. Ned predicted the need to deal with them at a later time.
The Queen and Kingslayer I can see as the short video indicated will be other major players.
So far this book is right up my alley of what I like.
So Ned's family is breaking up with him going South and his wife staying north ... this is going to cause some problems I can see.

  • Came across something that has been bothering me concerning GoT. In the books we have these great houses that have controlled their lands for many, many years. During the series with all the intermarrying it seemed as if these long held lands would simply change houses. I had thought that was kind of weird, since it had not happened much at all before. Now one of the Westeros forums there is this conspiracy dialogue going on, that it was the Citadel who orchestrated all of these different houses marrying each other in order to bring down the Targeryon's.

That is something to think about. I've never considered that possibility.
