Correct.
Plus, AT&T has a deal where they cannot be aced out of future iPhone models, unless they choose to.
PS - For anyone that uses their phone in the car a lot, Siri is worth the upgrade from 3GS. However, iPhone 5 will work with LTE...so probably worth the wait until Q2 2012.

How long is that AT&T deal for? It's got to have an end-date at some point in time, right?
The story linked below seems to think you're looking at Q3 2012 at the earliest for an LTE-capable iPhone.

EDIT - that said, Apple has shown an ability to lock up component supplies and a willingness to spend big money in order to do so, especially if they can get the component somewhat early like they did with the Mac Pro processors a while back. Another reason they keep so much cash on hand.

Depends on who you ask. To diehards who follow rumors about upcoming products, the iPhone 5 refers to a completely new device that was rumored to be in the works, to distinguish it from a slightly upgraded 4S. But to 99% of the world the iPhone 5 was just a logical name for the next iPhone.
Now that the 4S has been released, it seems clear that Apple is taking the tick-tock approach to iPhone releases, a la Intel.
16GB is a lot of space so long as you don't want to dump your whole iTunes library on your phone. I have way more than that on my home library so I keep a curated selection on my phone.

It is NOT the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5, with its teardrop-shape design and larger screen size, turned out to be just a rumor that people ran with. There may, in fact, be a future iPhone iteration with that design, but it was not part of the announcement yesterday. I had to chuckle a bit at the accessory manufacturers who started making all these cases for a phone that doesn't exist.

That would be great. The plans are insanely expensive right now. My Verizon bill, with the basic service, the data plan, and the mobile hot-spot is sky high. And some of that stuff has almost no additional expense/cost to the carrier, so it is almost pure profit. Whenever you have a situation like that, competition is likely on the way to push prices down.

If you are new to smart phones, and are not particularly a tech-nut, go with the iPhone. Undoubtedly the most intuitive, easy to use, welcoming to tap into its capabilities phone available. Whenever I pick up a droid, it takes me forever to figure out where anything is, how to do things, etc. It never took me any time to figure my iPhone 4 out.
By the way, even if you have not ever tried a smart phone, it will take you very little time to get sucked into it and find all kinds of things you never thought of that are now second nature as resources for your life. Amazing little machines.
Either get the iPhone 4 now, or wait the few weeks until the iPhone 4s is available. You won't regret it.

Yes, so long as your phone has a 3G signal. It's a great way to browse the web via your laptop or a wifi-only iPad when there is no open wi-fi available in the area.
You do have to sign up for a data plan that allows wifi tethering, so make sure you ask your provider about it when you sign up. Verizon, AT&T and sprint will all offer it but each approaches it differently in terms of plans/billing.
