Inequality and Executive Compensation

  • Fascinating new report on how incomes have sharply diverged:

    What is to be done?

“Close tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share,” Reagan vowed.

What a strange question. I think the best answer is 'to learn'.

Are we going to answer questions with questions? Or are you interested in serious dialog? You posed a question without giving up any ideas on answers. I put up ONE answer. I'm sure there are other answers that could come up in good conversation.

    What do you propose?

Note: I didn't read the entire article, yet. I'm in between accounts right now. I will have more time later. This is a subject I'm interested in talking about.

Without trampling on the opportunity at the American dream, how do we bring up the lower income levels...without handing it to them.

Who previously worked in journalism, the law (for a short while) and then as a management consultant. You've previously pm'ed me because you wrongly thought I had mentioned something about your off-board life. I don't see how mine is of any concern. Especially when this is such an important issue. I would love to have Gr8thunter's take on how to fix it....

If you want to bring this into the public...then fine.

You had used my first name in the post I had PM'd you about. Something I have NEVER revealed on this, or any, board.

The fact that you have made it a career of getting degrees is something that you not only have revealed here but crowed about more than once.

I think life is a lot like football. If you are talented, work hard and successful you win the trophy.

I don't know your first name. So I am not sure how I would have found out about it. I said as much in the reply to your PM. Considering your sensitivity on the matter I find it out that you show no such to others.

And I wouldn't 'crow' about 'a career of getting degrees'. That would be odd. And not at all relevant to this thread.

I have not and will not ever reveal anything on this board that has not previously been revealed by the poster.

You have been quite vocal about all of the degrees that you have earned...I did not reveal anything new.

...and I challenge you to show me where I have EVER shared something private about another poster on this board.

You may not have done. But I don't see how what I currently do as anything to do with the thread topic.

  • Companies are better run now that they were 50 years ago...smarter not harder. Why wouldn't the top earn a larger percentage?

    rkinslow

  • The left really dropped the ball on the whole wage gap argument. They framed it incorrectly from the beginning, cause they are stupid as fuck.

The argument should always have focused on the middle class. Instead of saying that in the 50's a CEO earned about 16x that of a average employee and now they earn 150x that, it should have been, in the 50's the average employee earned about 1/16th of that of the CEO. Now they are lucky to earn 1/100th. Why is the middle class's earning power shrinking etc....

That would have been a much, much more effective argument, and something that is a more positive argument, that the majority of Americans could have got behind and supported.

Do you think that the productivity of CEOs is hundreds of time greater than in the 60s?

They are not compensated based on personal productivity

Managers, executives, CEO's, whatever....are paid based on the results of their team, department, staff, or corporation.

Presumably the performance of their team would reflect in the rising pay of....their team. Ditto for their department. As it is real returns in wages has been flat for two decades. CEO pay has gone through the rood. Looks like a classic case of market failure to me...

    What is to be done?

Read the parable of the workers in the vineyard below, and pay special attention to vs 13-15.

    Especially 15.

Don't companies have the right to pay their CEO's what they'd like?

Instead of being filled with gratitude for workers who have jobs, you and those of your ilk can't seem to get beyond the disparity in pay.

Talk about looking at the glass as being half empty most of the time.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went.

“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.

“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’

8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
