GOP CANDIDATE...PEOPLE DON'T DIE FROM BREAST OR PROSTATE CANCER

  • From Huffington Post-GOP congressional candidate Chris Collins knows health care is expensive these days, but he argues it's for good reason: People are no longer dying from deadly forms of cancer.

"People now don't die from prostate cancer, breast cancer and some of the other things," he told The Batavian in an interview that was flagged Tuesday by City & State NY. Collins was discussing his desire to repeal Obamacare.

"The fact of the matter is, our healthcare today is so much better, we're living so much longer, because of innovations in drug development, surgical procedures, stents, implantable cardiac defibrillators, neural stimulators -- they didn't exist 10 years ago," he continued. "The increase in cost is not because doctors are making a lot more money. It's what you can get for healthcare, extending your life and curing diseases."

In fact, a lot of people do die from breast cancer and prostate cancer, despite advances in treatment. An estimated 577,190 people in the United States will die from cancer this year, including about 39,920 deaths from breast cancer and 28,170 from prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

The organization also points out that uninsured people are less likely to detect cancer in its early stages, making it far more expensive to treat.

Collins is challenging Rep. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.), who was chosen in a special election in May 2011.

Hochul said Monday that she knows the president's signature health care law is imperfect, but Congress needs to address other issues.

"There's a lot of uncertainty about this, but it is now the law of the land and they understand that," she said at a town hall in Victor, N.Y., according to local NBC affiliate WHEC.com. "And we don't want to take this country backward and re-litigate and re-fight over this. We've got a lot of other issues to deal with. We've got an economy that has to get back on track."

  • You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent … I’m not joking.”

    Joe Biden.

At least he's not running for Congress.

  • With any luck, Chris Collins will only be an answer to a trivia question about who said people don't die from breast and prostate cancer, rather than ever being a member of Congress.

  • OK, perhaps he misspoke, or explained himself poorly, but blaming increases in health care costs all on improvements of treatment shows little understanding of our problems. Increases in profit for insurance companies, medical supply providers, and other pieces along the way are huge reasons costs rise, along with legal expenses and many other non treatment based reasons.

    Yup.

  • Dumb statement, but it got me thinking.

Would this comment have been printed in HuffPo if he was a democratic candidate somewhere?

Just curious if the comment was newsworthy because he's a republican who was caught in a 'gotcha' moment making an ignorant comment, or a person uninformed about healthcare issues who happened to be a republican?

    Actually yeah....

If you say something dumb, they will go with it....

I don't deny that Huff Po has a liberal bent. But yeah...something this bad would get coverage. All of Biden's have despite the above post. They also ran Chris Hayes statement.

Update: Veterans are swarming Walsh's Facebook page condemning him.

    From Think Progress

    Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL)

After ThinkProgress published video showing Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) denigrating his opponent’s — a double amputee — military service, veterans swarmed the Illinois Republican’s Facebook page to denounce his attacks.

Many of these veterans described themselves as “dedicated conservatives”, “rock-ribbed Republicans”, and “Tea Party members.” Yet despite their ideological leanings, Walsh’s insult drove them to defend Tammy Duckworth and strongly condemn the Tea Party freshman.

Bob Frick wrote: “As a dedicated conservative and Republican and Tea Party member, you overstepped Congressman. Before I am either of the aforementioned, I am an American. I am a retired American soldier. How dare you refer to or determine what a hero is when you never served.”

Similarly, William Gilliam posted: “I am a rock-ribbed Republican and a Vietnam Veteran. Your comments about Tammy Duckworth’s military service and resultant injuries are just dead wrong. Unless and until you have the courage to sign up yourself, don’t disparage anyone else’s service nor their willingness to talk about it.”

A leading veterans group has also called on Walsh to resign.

Here is a sampling of veterans defending Duckworth and denouncing Walsh:
