Final Veepstakes Guesses

  • Romney is set to pick a running-mate any day now. Who do you want it to be? And who will he pick?

    Want: Paul Ryan
    Pick: Sen Portman

    Go for the Gold, Mitt!

portman because Romney needs Ohio. that's my guess, but i know hardly anything about portman

That's my thinking. My guess is that Romney thinks that he's in a better position to carry Florida as the economic fundamentals there with negative equity are so bad and that even a small bump in percentage point in Ohio could be enough in a highly important but razor-thin close state.

  • *** The final three: We can say with a high degree of confidence that Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential pick has largely come down to three men: former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan. And it’s more than possible that Romney has already made up his mind. All three VP finalists bring something different to the table. Pawlenty is the loyal outsider, who would enable a Romney-Pawlenty ticket to run as former governors vowing to take on Washington; Pawlenty also potentially would add some blue-collar appeal to the ticket. Portman would be the insider, someone who knows the ways of Washington and who could help govern starting on Day 1. And Ryan would be the crusader, who wants to substantially transform America’s entitlement programs and who would excite a good portion of the GOP’s conservative base. Indeed, Ryan has emerged a VERY REAL possibility, but he also brings the most risk. If Romney selects him, it’s more than conceivable that the dominant campaign discussion in the fall won’t be the economy -- but rather the deficit and Medicare. Of course, there was already a good chance the Ryan plan will get plenty attention regardless of Romney’s VP pick.

  • Good analysis.

My home-run pick, with the hope it would bring a mandate for REAL, gutsy reforms, would be Ryan. I also really like Pawlenty. I hope it is not Portman.

Another one you left out, who I believe would be VERY good (he could easily shake off that stupid response speech to Obama's SOTU address) is Jindal.

  • Who do I want? Marco Rubio
Who do I think it will be? Portman/Pawlenty (in that order)

I would prefer Ryan to either of the two very bland, and unexciting Portman/Pawlenty. My gut tells me that Ohio is far too important, and that Romney need Portman to win that state. Pawlenty does nothing for the electoral map, but brings a blue collar background to the party (something Romney desperately needs).

While Rubio does not get them the majority of the Latino vote, numbers that I have conservatively put his impact at 10% shift the Hispanic vote (more favorable numbers put at 25%), that is a big enough number to impact a number of important states.

Don't be so fast to write off Minnesota with a Pawlenty nomination.

Rubio needs more time, and to gain leadership experience.

The NM governor would still be someone I think would be very helpful on the Hispanic numbers. Conventional thinking is that the fact that her giving a speech at the convention would discount the potential for her to be the nominee. Not sure if that is totally true, but it is likely the case.

True...with his level of experience he should limit himself to running for President.

    LOL

I would prefer him to finish his term in the Senate as well. I think he helps more in a leadership role in the legislature and better sets himself up for a Presidential run.

...but none of the other candidates excite me.

  • I started a thread for this, but it might serve well to make note here....

Sarah Palin's Wikipedia page was updated at least 68 times the day before John McCain announced her selection, with another 54 changes made in the five previous days previous. Tim Pawlenty, another leading contender for McCain's favor, had 54 edits on August 28th, with just 12 in the five previous days. By contrast, the other likely picks — Romney, Kay Bailey Hutchison — saw far fewer changes. The same burst of last-minute editing appeared on Joe Biden's Wikipedia page, Terry Gudaitis of Cyveillance, told the Washington Post.

Portman is seeing a rise in wiki edits

PS: I have been pointing to Pawlenty and Portman for some time, promising you guys a dull white V P nominee instead of Rubio, Jindal, Christie, Condi, Bachman or any of your other fantasy names. I am glad to see many of you are coming to reality finally.

  • I just read an interesting take from David Frum on this issue:

"The clamor you are hearing for Paul Ryan for VP is not about helping the Romney candidacy. It's about controlling the Romney campaign—and ultimately the Romney presidency. It's about forcing a platform on Romney, and then dictating the agenda for that presidency's first year. The platform happens to be suicidal, and the agenda impossible, but that does not matter to the Ryan advocates. They take the old Tammany Hall point of view: "Better to lose an agenda than lose control of the party."

In that sense, the Ryan proposal is a test of Romney's leadership. If he accedes, it's a big surrender of control—and a surrender to many of those who most opposed (and who inwardly continue to dislike) his nomination."
