Dish Network vs. DirecTV vs. Time Warner Cable

  • Getting a new place in a month or so, and with it, a new tv provider.

I want one whole-house DVR and another HD box. I don't want a ton of channels either - just the basic sports channels so I can watch USC football and the Lakers, and whatever channels my wife needs for her Real Housewives, Toddlers & Tiaras, Biggest Loser-type stuff. I don't want HBO or any of that.

Any recommendations? The satellite providers seem like their packages are cheaper than Time Warner, but I've been happy with the quality I got from TW at my current place and I've noticed that my friends who have satellite seem to have some problems with stuttering/skipping picture and sound, which would drive me crazy.

If it makes a difference, I will be getting my internet from TW.

  • I love DirecTV and I couldn't imagine having any other service at this time. In the 5 years that I've had DirecTV in my apartment and condo, I believe that there has been only 1 or 2 times at which the service was interrupted due to weather. I don't have any stuttering/skipping problems with my picture and sound.

  • I hate comcast or Time Warner and would prefer having DirectTV or Dish.

  • I've had directv for 13 years and love it. No experience with the others though.

  • Directv. Got it last year after getting sick and tired of Comcast's customer service and crazy rates. With Directv I got for $60 more than I had for almost $200 from Comcast...and just kept Comcast's internet service at a reduced rate...so total i'm paying about $100.

  • i personally LOVE direcTV but something to think about if you are a Lakers fan..the new TIME WARNER deal starts next year (2012-2013) and the only way you will be able to catch games is if you have time warner cable as they will no longer be on k-cal nor fox sports west. if you get DTV or dish you'll be stuck watching the shitty clippers on ktla and fsn

Lakers Time Warner Deal | Time Warner Cable, Lakers strike 20-year TV deal - Los Angeles Times

Time Warner Cable has struck a game-changing TV deal with the Lakers to create two new regional sports channels — one in English and one in Spanish — that will use the world champions as their

Time Warner has the deal, but they will license the channel out to everyone.

DirectTV is the way to go. Te only exception would be if you love someplace with extremely bad weather in which case cable may be more reliable than satellite.

Even in bad weather, you can buy satellite disc warmers. I installed them this year, and they seemed to do the trick.

Aren't those only to stop build up of snow and ice? They won't helping a heavy snow, or even heavy rain when the actual falling precipitation interferes with signal. I have had momentary disruption in very heavy rain. I don't see how a heater could prevent that.

Normal rainfall is no problem though, and I have used direct TV in a light snow too without problem.

Yes, it is only to stop the build up of snow. We didn't have as much snow this year as normal, so maybe it was just a good year in that regard.

  • DirecTV is the shit. I had all the 2012 USC games recorded on my DVR, but for some reason some of them are no longer watchable. Maybe games can only sit for so long?

I know with my Dish DVR (DirectTV didn't work due to tree interference), the recordings get superceded after a while unless you mark them as "protected".

    two things.

    1) when you say Direct TV is the shit you are complementing them. Shit is bad, The Shit is good.

    2) That is not really a direct TV issue it is a failure of the DVR that can happen with any DVR. You had a disk error or corruption of some kind. That is in no way unique to Direct TV. I have a program I saved from 6 years ago that I can still watch.

    Rosebowl91

  • I have/had personal experience with many different providers. I will say that I like At&T Uverse best. Though that is because I like there On-demand set-up best, so if you are not going with premium channels, just go with what's cheapest.

I know, I was intending to compliment them. I love DirecTV. I can see how one might think I don't though, since my following sentence was a bit negative. I'll have to see if there is a protect option like OldTrojan suggested and then I will have no complaints at all (regarding DirecTV or DVR).

OK, got it. Indeed it is the shit.

Yes you can save programs, once you select a recorded program you can chose play, keep until..., delete now, save to VCR, don't do anything.

Go to "Keep Until" and change option to "keep until I delete"

    Rosebowl91

  • If it is available, get Verizon Fios. I had DirecTV and like many posters here thought it was great. Then I switched to Verizon Fios and the picture is better and the tv has never gone out ever. Fios internet has never gone out either, rain and all. DirecTV has gone out a handful of times due to bad weather. Only thing is Sunday Ticket is not offered so I just go to Buffalo Wild Wings for my sunday NFL.

Oh yeah, and Time Warner sucks balls!!!!

Thanks for the tip. Hopefully I can still change the delete options on the few games I have left.

There really is no comparison, DirecTV is the best service around. I believe the founder was born, and currently resides, in a town about 20 minutes from my house.

  • Dishnetwork here, don't really care about the NFL package. Fuck Rupert Murdoch and anything ever associated with him.

  • Yep, would love to go with U-Verse or FiOS but it's an AT&T area so no FiOS and the only "U-Verse" service AT&T offers is their shitty rebranded DSL that tops out at 3 Mbps.

My parents have FiOS internet and tv at their place in LB and it's great.

I totally agree. I switched from Time Warner to FiOS, and I couldn't be happier. The service is so much better and I went from getting 1 Mbs down to 20 Mbs down.

Bottom of the article you linked:

"For Time Warner Cable, snagging the rights to the Lakers and creating two channels is a shift in strategy. While many cable operators, including Comcast, Cox and Cablevision, are major players in the regional sports channel business, Time Warner Cable has pretty much stuck to the sidelines. However, Witmer said the move to get into business with the Lakers is part of its overall desire to "control our economic destiny."

The challenge will be getting other distributors to carry the Lakers. Regional sports networks are among the most expensive programming for distributors, costing more than $2.50 per month per subscriber, according to industry estimates. Given the cost of landing the Lakers, Time Warner Cable will probably be looking for more than $3.50.

First stop will be DirecTV, which has about 1 million subscribers in the area. Other distributors include Charter Communications and Cox Cable. Fox Sports West, meanwhile, will face pressure from distributors — including Time Warner Cable — to lower its prices because it would no longer have the area's marquee property."
