Kevin Orr, Washington bankruptcy lawyer, tapped to take on 'Olympics of restructuring.' Bankruptcy filing still possible.

Not opposed to the decision, but aren't his tasks what the city council and mayor are elected for? Didn't know states/cities could just appoint a guy to make decisions on behalf of the city.
With one exception, a well off town with a population of about 1600, no town that has been taken over in MI has been turned around. In one case, the appointed city manager has been found guilty of embezzling millions from the city. This is a terrible idea. Power is stripped from all elected officials and a dictator is appointed by the Governor. The dictator has no accountability. He can void city contracts, fire anyone, hire anyone, spend money any way he sees fit, tax any way he sees fit, etc. All democracy has been terminated by the Governor. This is the same Governor, along with the legislature, that took away union rights. He did it before and the citizens vacated his actions at the ballot box. This time he made sure that they could not vote on the issue. He has no regard for the MI citizens and will be voted out of office.
The Governor took away all power from local elected officials in several cities, including Detroit, and appointed dictators.
What a mess.
An understatement. As much as you cherish civil liberties, this is your Hell. People cannot vote for their government. People have zero control. They are under a local dictatorship. Remember, I do not use "dictator" lightly (I argued with you using it too lightly).
No I agree. This is rock bottom. A total nightmare. Poor Detroit!
What is their real unemployment rate, like 41% or something ridiculous?
As of December 10.2%.
One of the problems is that the government is not collecting money owed. Approximately half the people do not pay their property taxes and nothing is done to enforce the collection. Most people do not pay traffic tickets and nothing is done to enforce the tickets. It is crazy.
As you might surmise I am skeptical of any government reported statistics, figures, etc. 10.2% is what we're told. I have to believe the realistic number is significantly higher. That poor town never recovered from the late 80s. Roger Smith!!!!
