"the only place the Armsteads can be together is at USC"

  • A solid source has told me this today. This might be something to weight on Guss's mind. There is no guarantee that Armond will ever get reinstated by USC and probably wouldnt know until May is my guess.

Armsteads cannot play together on the west coast and they really are a family that wants the kids close to home. Might be the only way USC gets back into this. Armsteads do like USC, love the coaching staff, and Eddy O is their favorite. They let USC visit for these reasons. They have never said no to the coaches. That is not who their beef is with.
Guss might be coming to a crossroads in that he has painted himself into a corner and might realize this. That is only a guess on my part. Guss is a good guy and a concerned parent.

This part is only my opinion, but if he insists on playing dtackle then I think USC dodged one here. I think he is the best olineman prospect out west since even before Kalil. Yep, that good.

  • Since ND apparently also refused to clear Armond recently, you'd have to think the odds of USC reversing course and clearing him now are slim.

I agree, but the ND folks not clearing him might have opened up Armsteads eyes that it wasnt just USC and thus a lot of the bad guy image that our doctors had might have dissapated.
I will say an SEC school would probably clear him in a heartbeat.

You don't see him being effective as a dtackle?

Disagree. I suspect that ND was influenced heavily by USC's precedent ... however, USC is free to continue their own decision-process without regard to external entities. In other words, I doubt that the ND decision lessons any chances that USC might allow Mondo to play - not saying the chances are good or not, just that ND has no influence.

    Not as effective as OT.

He could surprise everyone and turn into the next great 3-technique guy, however, his beast earning potential is at OT.

I've said it before but the difference in play between Arik Armstead the O lineman and Arik Armstead the D lineman is pretty huge. On o line Arik is probably the top player in the COUNTRY not just at his position, but in the country. On D he's probably a mid 4 star talent that is slow and gets put off balance (particularly at D tackle)

    another advantage to USC.

They know that Arik will remain on the dline for his career unless he decides to flip. Prior to coming to SC, Armond was told by everyone that he would be a great guard. He wanted to play defense and the usc coaches have never deviated.

With the linemen SC is bringing in this year, there won't be an urgency to move Arik to OT, like nearly every other school. Especially if we land Banner and either Peat or Murphy. Plus, Tuerk and Simmons can play tackle. If Arik comes to SC, he will remain on the line.

Of course, the coaches will probably mention to him that a switch to OT might make him very wealthy along the way.

I dont but my opinion doesnt mean shet. Ed Orgeron thinks he can be and also USC staff has always felt Arik is the number one overall prospect in the country. Take that for what its worth, but I think the USC coaching staff is a far better eval of talent than I or anyone else on this board is.
He is not as quick as Armond of as aggressive.
Arik had only four sacks this year on defense. That would concern me.

Not trying to be an ass but where exactly did you see Armstead was not cleared by ND? Do you have a link or remember where you read it or you only assuming that since Armond seems uninterested in ND that his lack of interest is due to not being cleared??

I believe that FREE KOBE posted that little tidbit last week. He stated that he wasn't sure if it was the ND doctors or the ND lawyers who made the call, though.

  • Arik reminds me of Anthony Munoz at OT. Not impressed with him at DE though.

After watching the AA game, I think he is too slow to be a DE, which is not to say he can't be a good DE or DT after Ed O spends time with him. I saw some plays where he was really lumbering. I think at his size, he could end up being a solid DT, but DE is a stretch after what I saw.

From what I've heard, there's no way Armond will get medical clearance here or anywhere. Huge malpractice if he does get medical clearance and a waiver from the parents won't make any difference.

  • D-line if fine if he comes to USC. Bradford would have been a better LB or S but he was a great RB for us. Same for Arik at DL vs. OL.

  • I really don't get how we'd be dodging anything by missing on a 6'8" 300lb legacy that could go to any school he wanted at whatever pos he wants and is a great kid that is smart....?

  • Scout has him committing to Oregon. I guess if he decides to play somewhere else without his brother, that is a possibility.
    Don't like that at all.

I'm with u on Arik! From everything I saw from him, I was never impressed by his play on the DL... I jus never saw any tenacity nor attitude which u need on D!!! In a sense he played soft 4 some1 his sz... Of course everything could change playin in college so who knows how good he'll b on D

Arik is by all accounts a far better OT than DL.

Best to get him into USC and out of the hands of another school (Oregon) and then let things play out.

I would not be surprised by a switch from DL to OT.

Disagree my good friend! I HOPE he stays in the PAC or ND as is the case with every recruit SC misses on!
