Would Darreus Rodgers consider Greyshirt.....

  • Given how much time he will miss, is it possible that Darreus still become a Trojan and take his time before enrolling in the Spring? Would this allow us to use another scholarship for this class then count him against next year's 15?

If he took a greyshirt, he (or another EE) would still count towards this class (2012) as he would enroll in January. it would just help USC get to 75.

I would prefer he just enrolls after his completes his summer school class as nothing binds him to USC if he decides to greyshirt. It would also be beneficial to have him as 1 of the 75 and allow Andrews to go back to being a WO.

  • He's going to qualify and he's coming.

Not putting the OP on blast, but at some point it's probably going to start becoming disrespectful to keep this line of talk going.

Settle down phear, he's just asking a question. Gabe's a good poster and simply trying to see all the possible angles with this one.

I get where you're coming from and you're definitely right, but in this case he doesn't mean anything bad by it.

I appreciate it. Not saying anything bad and hope Rodgers is in. I think he is a likely RS anyways with all the depth at WR, so I figured it wouldn't hurt.

It's a smart question to ask, because I think you're probably right that he'd likely redshirt even if he made it in for the start of camp, let alone if he comes in a bit late on account of his grades taking time to process.

Personally, I have a tough time seeing a grayshirt happening but stranger things have, and it was a good line of thinking. Fight on my man.

  • It's hard to imagine him not redshirting this year. He's going to be so far behind and with only a month to practice and get settled in college it just seems like too much. It will be interesting to see how he handles it though because he's always been very adamant against it.

This is a good learning lesson for the young man. It could mature him if he is willing to do what is best for the team. I gather he had some issues with schooling the past few years. Sometimes, this can be a great awakening to the realities of life for an athlete that school does matter and will benefit him long term. There's no hurry to begin his career here. He can get his studies in order, take guidance from Coach Baxter, be in for Spring Ball, and be ready to compete for playing time should Woods leave early.

    +1

Agree that D-Rog should get acclimated first, settle into his role as a student, and everything else will fall into place, especially if he redshirts.

Coach Baxter is so valuable to the players on and off the field in addition to directing STs. So lucky to have him at USC. peace

  • So many times we hear of kids totally pouting and hating the redshirt. Then the next year we here how much it helped them and was such a blessing. I hope DRog takes full advantage if it happens and is ready to go next season.

  • Rodgers redshirting is pretty much a given after he gets his school work done. I'm hoping a certain senior takes him under his wing. McNeal dealt with the same issues with school coming into the program, but once he got straight McNeal is now a big part of the Trojan team. Senior leadership isn't just about football

I don't know why so many kids view being red-shirted as a slap in the face....
Some of the best players in CFB history have been red-shirted. It allows time to learn the playbook and get acclimated to college life while not burning a year of eligibility.
I would much rather DR enroll now, be red-shirted and the coaching staff figure out how to get under the 75 limit.

  • It's hard for an 18 year old that has been the man their whole life to be the guy sitting on the bench and learning a playbook. It's also hard to see how valuable that year can be to their development.

My understanding was that he took classes at a secondary school that did not count and that he had to make those up.

It appears, more than anything that Rogers' academic clearance had more to do with WHERE he took his classes than what he did while he was in them.

Either way, most reports, including the ones from Rogers, himself, say that he is getting the job done in the classroom. That shows maturity and a good sense of urgency already.
