Why not Markowitz to NT?

  • With the depth questions on the interior dline, it seems like it would make sense. 6'1" 310, was battling for a starting spot the last 2 seasons before getting hurt. If he stays healthy, it'd be a way for him to get into the rotation. Him and AWoods could be a terror. I think Tavai is better suited to DT behind Uko. Not trying to discount Heyward but he is coming off surgery and is a DT. Does any agree? I'm not sold on Temple just yet.

The depth on the interior oline appears to be fine, especially with the development of Hobbi, who I'm hoping will take over Abe's position of 2 seasons ago as backup at the 3 interior spots.

  • I actually think Temple is the sleeper of fall camp. Orgeron said before his injury that he was going to be a guy that was going to be in the rotation. If he can develop into a serviceable NT that would enable Tavai to play the 3 technique and give us the 4 man rotation we have been looking for.

  • I hope Temple is that good, but I'm having trouble getting excited about a 280 lb guy taking over for the 270 lb guy. Both Temply and Markowitz have injury issues, but Markowitz has at least proven to be starter-quality before his injuries, and seems to be built for a NT more than an olineman.

  • It's hard to move fifth year seniors... Otherwise this plus Baucham to tailback would be hugely helpful.

My only question is why does "starter-quality" on the OL have anything to do with playing nose tackle?

Has Markowitz ever played there before? It's an entirely different skill set. EDIT: I saw that he did play defense... but it was as a sophomore or junior in high school.

If we just needed to have a big strong player at NT, we would've moved Martin Coleman there years ago.

    This.

Just because the body type fits doesn't mean the player does.

  • What is the rotation going to look like?

DT: Uko, Heyward (if he gets healthy), Temple

    NT: Tavai, Woods

God help us if Uko gets hurt

Coleman was 6'5", as I mentioned before, Markowitz is 6'1", a more typical NT height. The only reason I even brought it up is because Temple was moved. He was recruited as an OL, what does that have to do with playing NT? Same answer as Markowitz. Him being a 5th year senior has nothing to do with it since he hasnt played much the last 2 years. I am wondering why Markowitz wouldnt be moved instead of, or in addition to Temple.

Because we need a backup center and Orgeron has never remotely considered the possibility that Markowitz could play NT?

Hobbi can be backup center. How do you know Orgeron "has never remotely considered the possibility"? I understand of thats your opinion, but you act like your Ed's wife or something.

    I'm confused.

From the other thread I thought Blem was TrojanWarrior's signifigant other. biggrin

Are you referring to THIS Cody Temple?

    http://usc.scout.com/a.z?s=15&p=8&c=1&nid=4786617

He played DT throughout high school, recording 109 tackles and 7 sacks as a junior. He was recruited by a bunch of schools at DT, and was a scholarship level player. Although USC thought he might make a good OL, he was still recruited at DT by other schools.

Markowitz, on the other hand, was a walk-on at USC who was only being recruited by schools at OL.

As for 6'5" being too tall for a NT... there are a bunch of NT in the NFL at 6'4" or more. What about Dontari Poe coming out this year? He's 6'5"... is he too tall for NT?

    AbsenteeTrojan

  • I dont recall the last time a USC NT was taller than 6 '2", so thats why I thought Markowitz's height was more ideal than Coleman, but never did I say 6'5" was too tall, I just dont recall a USC 6'5" NT. do you? Like my original question said, I was wondering why he wouldnt be considered, thats all, along with Temple or instead of, I didnt think Orgeron's wife and Cody's dad were going to reply, I sorry if i offended you.

But I have noticed that you are the only one asking it

Jeezus, Don't be so sensitive, Petunia
No one attacked you or even made fun of you
I would suggest you develop thicker skin if you are going to put stuff like this out there and invite discussion
    Just some friendly advice

  • jesus no..

just accept we are terribly thin at DT this season..

    trojans87

  • Markowitz isn't exactly quick twitch enough to play DL. His feet injury history do not exactly make him a prime subject to get cut and double teamed every play. Plus the fact that he hasn't played on that side of the ball for 5 years.

    sorry, NEVER happen.

Blem is right, it's never entered the staff's 'realm of possibility'

George Achica was 6'5", I believe. He was an All American and won the Morris Trophy in 1982.

I hear ya. So much for my daydreaming. I say we keep Markowitz at center/guard.

    That's nice.

Too bad you were such a douce about it in the meantime.

You asked a question and got smart responses.

But since you didn't like the answers, you started insulting posters who gave you very thoughtful answers.

Don't ask a question if you aren't prepared for answers that might be different from your point of view.

Give respect and get respect. It's a simple concept.

HORRIBLE idea. There are a lot of 310 lb guys that CANNOT play NT. Markowitz is not an NT. He's a very servicable Center but NOT AN NT. Temple makes a much better DT. Just because a guy is 310lbs does not mean he can play NT for USC. Completely ridiculous logic.

Well I apologize for insulting people, I'm sure they're glad you're here to stand up for them, Mr Helper. I misunderstood Blem, and I called someone else Cody's dad. Wow, what insults. The funny part is another player dad actually did chime in, and I dont see him around much anymore since TOS days, so my post at least got me some feedback in my daydreaming moments.

At least you proved I'm not alone in the douche category, so thanks for the company, Trav.

I enjoy this board because people (for the most part) treat each other with respect.

it's much more enjoyable to have respectful, adult conversations with people than being on a board where a bunch of insults are getting tossed around.

Like I said before- Give respect and get respect.
