Why Keep The Rose Bowl Tradition...

  • ...if it means USC or any Pac 12 team might be unable to host a national semi final BCS playoff game on the West Coast?

The attached article discusses the current direction the BCS is heading in their Plus 1 format, and I found the following snippet interesting.

Would you be in favor of supporting Larry Scott and Jim Delany's position, even if it meant a PAC 12 team and her fans might have to travel further to 'host' a semi final game?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conference commissioners are still debating about what to do with the Rose Bowl as well, according to the source. Rose Bowl officials repeatedly have said they prefer to keep their traditional matchup between Big Ten and Pac-12 teams; Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott also favor keeping the traditional tie-in intact. But if the Rose Bowl isn't willing to give up its affiliations with those conferences, it might fall out of a potential national semifinals rotation. However, the Rose Bowl would still be eligible to bid for a national championship game.

Source -- BCS exploring neutral-site 4-team playoff format - ESPN

BCS power brokers are floating playing the semis and championship game in a proposed playoff format at neutral sites and playing bowl games closer to New Year's Day, a source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

  • It is an extremely simple solution

Go back to the BCA. After the bowls are done, the winner of the Rose Bowl plays a winner of another major bowl as selected by committee for the national championship to be played at the Rose Bowl.

That's not an option at this point.

It's either keep the tradition of the Rose Bowl and run the risk of not getting to host a semi final BCS bowl game, or not keeping the tradition of the Pac/B10 in the Rose Bowl.

  • The tradition of the Rose Bowl is one aspect of not having a playoff for all these years, I am not interested in continuing that.

    westcoastfball

  • The Rose bowl doesnt always have the Big-10 champ vs the Pac-10/12 champ anymore anyway.
Shoot, some years they dont even have one of the Conf representing, like in 2011 TCU vs Wisc.

The tradition of the game is already gone a bit...

So put in a 4 team playoff, if the Pac-12 champion is picked then its the Big-10 champ vs the pac-12 runner up.

Wisconsin was the big 10 champ.

I think the issue is the Rose Bowl could be used as a Semi-Final Game location. That game would be played on/near January 1st, which is the tradition time the actual Rose Bowl is played. It will most likely not be possible to have the Rose Bowl and a Semi-Final game at the Rose Bowl Stadium within a day of each other.

Also, the only reason the Rose Bowl got stuck with TCU the previous season is this provision in the BCS rules:

"If the Pac-12 or Big Ten champion is picked for the BCS National Championship Game, then the Rose Bowl must choose the highest-ranked school from a non-AQ conference instead of the respective conference's #2 team if there is a non-AQ school ranked at least #4 in the final BCS standings. This was the case in 2010, when the Oregon Ducks made it to the national championship, permitting the #3 TCU Horned Frogs to attend, and win, the 2011 Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl is permitted to override this provision if it has been taken within the previous four seasons."

Now, I don't know how Illinois got selected in 2007 for the Rose Bowl. Maybe because Hawaii got an auto-berth to the Sugar Bowl.
I bet the Rose Bowl would like to eliminate that provision, so they can pit Pac/B1G champ or runner up.

  • If the BCS is looking at neutral sites as an option for the Semi-Final game, then why couldn't the LA Coliseum host it on January 1st, while the Rose Bowl Stadium hosts the Rose Bowl? Also, Qualcomm is an NFL stadium that has hosted a Super Bowl. It could host a semi-final game as well. Not sure the BCS would like to go to Seattle in January, but that would be an option as well. So, there are a few options for the West Coast to host a neutral site Semi-Final or National Championship game.

Well Ohio St and LSU were in the title game, so the Rose Bowl had the 1st choice of replacement teams, I think they could have picked Georgia, but I'm not to sure about that.

I imagine the BCS would want venues that have luxury suites. The most likely west coast venue would be where the Arizona Cardinals play.

Then, that brings up the same scheduling issue with the Rose Bowl, unless the Fiesta Bowl is willing to give up their auto-berth to the Big-12 champ to host the Semi-Final game.

I believe there is/was a rotation of which Bowl gets to pick the at-large teams first. Not sure if the Sugar Bowl had first dibs, but that would explain why they got Georgia.

I think the Rose Bowl had the first choice since Ohio St was the #1 team. The only reason I am not sure about Georgia, is because they may have been locked into the Sugar Bowl since LSU was the #2 team.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

I think there will be some sort of compromise. IMO Scott is not as wed to the Rose Bowl as Delaney is.

    A couple of possibilities:

    1. Rose keeps taking PAC and BIG champs, but does not participate in playoff rotation. When PAC and BIG champs are in playoff, Rose takes #2 team from each conference.

    2. Rose keeps taking PAC and BIG champs, and does not participate in playoff rotation unless PAC and BIG champs are both in playoff.

    3. Rose becomes a part of playoff rotation and conference ties end.

#1 seems the most likely, although it will ultimately doom the Rose to "Best of the Rest" status. #3 seems least likely, given the Rose's preference for tradition.

#2 sounds unwieldy, but it wouldn't be that hard to make it work, and over the course of time it would balance out. If the semis rotated between the Sugar, Orange and Fiesta (two years on, one year off), it wouldn't be that hard to swap the Rose in for a year if the PAC and BIG champs were both in the playoff. Resume the rotation the following year, picking up where it was left off.

Odds are that both the PAC and BIG (mostly due to the BIG not making it) won't have teams in the Top 4 in a lot of years (unless it's a conference champs only format), especially once the PAC and BIG start playing each other every year.

These people could save themselves a lot of trouble if they just went to 8 teams and used the four major bowls on New Years as the first round.

BIG meets PAC in Rose, with B12, SEC and ACC hosting seeded opponents (1 con champ and 2 wildcards) in the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange. Would really solve all of the problems that way.

  • From what I've read, the NCAA doesn't want to go too deep into January, as that conflicts with NFL Playoffs. A solution to your 8-team playoff would be to host the Quarter-Final games a week before January 1st (but that falls in and around Christmas), the Semi-Final games on January 1st and the Championship game a week later.

They are not even considering 8 teams, and having home sites for the semi-finals are all but out of the picture now too.

This is where the BCS has fucked things up. They should have sent Georgia out west the the RB instead of Illinios. Go for the match-ups. I think conference alliances to Bowls is over. As much as I like the P10 & B10, it's not going to work anymore like the old days (which I tend to prefer sometimes)

How is it the BCS' fault that Rose Bowl choose the #3 Big 10 team?

    westcoastfball

  • Dump the whole tradition of Pac 12 - Big 10 game. Times have changed and its a whole different college game ! i want to see the best match-up possible. I want people on the East Coast and the whole college world to see that the Pac can play anyone.!!

This is where the BCS should have pushed back in favor of the better match up. I completely forgot that the RB choose Illinois (hence the conference affiliations working against us). If the BCS had ignored the computers and lined up the proper teams, we may be complaining less (maybe). This last year's game was a travisty, and the year we were blocked because the computers still selected OKLA even after they lost their CCG, well........

I know. I said some years they dont have one of the Conf representing like 2011. Wisc vs TCU (no Pac-10 team)

Rose bowl tradition WAS the Big-10 champ vs the Pac-10 Champ, that tradition is gone with runner ups or teams from another Conf playing in the game now.

Let the Rose bowl host a national championship every 4 years, and the other 3 years take the best Big-10 and the best Pac-12 teams that dont make the 4 team playoff.

  • More important to me is that ONLY conference champions get to compete in the playoffs. Of course, the SEC won't go for that.
