Whoa, Penn State recruited SMU players..

  • Use any adage you want — "What goes around, comes around"; "Eye for an eye"; "Karma is a bitch"; "Do unto others…" — but there's an undeniable fact that when you do something undesirable to someone, something bad will eventually probably happen to you. (This is why I never laugh when people slip on ice no matter how hilarious it might be).

So when a New York Times story from 1987 started to make its rounds on the Internet (thanks to a tweet from @IllinoisLoyalty) regarding coaches poaching players off the SMU campus after the football program was hit with the NCAA's death penalty, it wasn't a huge surprise that Penn State was prominently mentioned as one of the schools doing the poaching.

Representatives from all over the country milled about outside the football offices at Ownby Stadium waiting to snare a few minutes of the players' time.

Among the larger schools that were reportedly represented on campus were Penn State, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Houston, U.C.L.A., Arizona, Tulsa, Alabama and Kansas.

Obviously, the situation was a little different. SMU didn't field a team in 1987 and canceled the season in 1988 while Penn State will still play in 2012. However, both the SMU and Penn State NCAA misfortune was an opportunity for other schools to get their hands on some proven players. Penn State was once as opportunistic regarding SMU as many coaches are now toward Penn State.

That's why any indignation over USC, LSU or any other school trying to lure a current Penn State player shouldn't be nonexistent. Not saying it's right or wrong, but it's part of the recruiting game, a game Penn State once played.

***Note: Guys, notice Texas A&M in there? lol, someone needs to let Status and the other A&M sheep lovers!

  • Excellent find!

Bottom line, if the rules permit it, schools will do it. I may have been bummed when some of our guys transferred after we were sanctioned but I certainly didn't begrudge other schools for recruiting our players just like I don't have any issue with us going after Redd; if you can make your team better and the kid sees it as their best option personally, then that should be that.

PSU benefitted from it once, now they have to deal with it happening to them. It's the inverse of our situation.

  • do u think it is different since smu had no team for two years and penn state can play its seasons out?

note not saying it is right or wrong or that redd shouldn't have an opportunity to play out his career in college with another team

This is more in response to people on the BB knocking Lane for offering Silas. Our coaches went to the Redd home - invited, not parked inside the campus...regardless of the reason or difference in situations, no need for anyone laying in wait directly on campus to recruit, or "take in" players from a sanctioned program.

It's all how you do things, how difficult would it be for any program to personally contact players, set up a conference room in a local hotel with a presentation? Home visits can be scheduled if necessary.

oh gotcha, at least its not like ucla who was outside with pizza boxes for a couple players, redd clearly has interest, doubt he is just using it as a free vacation out west for a couple days

its a bit hard to follow, but if redd is on board does that move u above the limit from the sanctions?

really? i think a lot of people including myself are just pissed off and fed up with people labeling our school as a football only culture, way more students are involved with THON then even know the starting qb name, and we actaully care that we graduate over 77 percent of our football players, way above the average, anyway ill stop my bantering, seems like redd is all locked up.

does he become the starting running back or is mcneal good enough to hold him off, i don't watch to many usc games outside of when you all play ND or stanford, with redd i think you guys are so loaded up that anything less then a NC should get kiffin canned

Believe me...we understand what you're going through....and we still get the same old tired BS from ignoramuses that never bothered to read the NCAA report.

One of the greatest Trojan offenses of all time had two RBs gain 1,000 yards ea, and two WRs gain 1,000 receiving. Mr. Redd will get his touches.

Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron were both coaching at USC during that great offensive run from 2003-2005.

McNeal is the starter. Redd will be fortunate if he touches the ball more than 8 times a game. The offense will be Matt Barkley with Woods & Lee on the outside, a trio of TE's, as well as McNeal as the every down back. The change of pace, home run threat is DJ Morgan...if he secures the football.

LOL No, I think you would've laughed. Anyway, considering the circumstances, I dont think Penn St folks would be mad if Ucla was trying that hard.

Good punters are hard to find.
