USC opens at #3 in coaches poll

  • USCTraveler said...

Contrast the 5 PAC12 voters plus 3 small CA schools to the 7 SEC coaches, plus 8 more coaches from small schools in SEC states like Tulane, MIddle Tennessee, etc.

15 of the voters are from SEC states (I'm not counting guys like Dabo or Al Golden.)

That's nearly 1/3 of the voters. No wonder why there is so much SEC bias.

Bad enough that the media slobbers all over the SEC constantly. This poll is ridiculous.

The best thing I can say about this poll is that it will no longer be relevant starting in 2014. Bring on the selection committee!

yeah and hopefully like CLFK said, theres no (SEC) bias there at all .doubt it.

The selection committee won't be perfect, but it will be a lot more geographically balanced than this nonsense poll.

And having two more spots open, with emphasis on SOS and Conference Champions, should go a long way towards the PAC champ getting into the playoff almost every year, even if they have a loss.

  • Good, SC can get in if they win out. That's all that matters.

SC is ranked third because only 9 of the 59 coaches that vote are from schools that are west of Texas.... and we know that Lane didn't rank USC at all.

  • A few teams from the PAC 12 can move up very quickly with dome big wins in their OOC games. Washington plays LSU, love to see the dogs take chase the cats, Cal has Ohio St. , Arizona over Okie ST. , UCLA/Nebraska , Oregon St/Wisconsin , Arizona St./Missouri . If the PAC 12 can pull off these OOC games early in the season then hopefully the rankings come with the victories.

  • Its almost like the top 3 are 1a 1b and 1c with how close the points were

    #1 LSU 1,403
    #2 Bama 1,399
    #3 USC 1,388

    then the big gap

    #4 OK 1,276
    #5 O 1,258

    then a another big gap

    #6 Georgia 1,061

With the top 3 pretty much equal, I like us being #3 to start. Keeps that growing chip on our shoulder!

Just think, that on November 3rd, 4 of the top 5 teams will be playing each other (oh and Oklahoma plays Iowa St....fingergun)

I hope the AP puts us at 4 or 5. Just make that chip even bigger.

No- that would just add legitimacy to the Coaches having SC # 3.

In a perfect world, I would have liked to see SC at # 2 in both polls.

But with the coaches putting Bama at # 2, and SC at 3, I'd like to see the AP look like this:

    1. USC
    2. LSU
    3. Oregon
    4. Bama
    5. OU

That way, the debate becomes which team is better LSU or USC. Bama shouldn't be in the conversation based on their losses on D.

If Bama starts lower than 2, and if Bama loses to LSU, they are likely to drop further than they would if they are # 2 and lose.

LSU and Bama at 1 and 2 is terrible, as it sets up those two teams to stay at the top all year, even when one beats the other.

An undefeated USC team will bypass the LSU-Bama loser, but I'd rather they start ahead of one of those teams, so we don't have to hear about 1 and 2 LSU and Bama blah blah blah.

If those teams go undefeated the rest of the way, they're going to be crying for a rematch.

  • Can someone please explain UGA always getting ranked in the top 10-15 every year, and then going 8-4? Its almost as bad as when ND was ranked in the top 10 every year and then petered out to 9-3 or 8-4 as well. Is UGA the new ND?

They did win 10 games last year, though.

And didn't have to play any of Bama, LSU or Arky.

    Same as this year.

They lost to Boise in ATL last year. They lost to the Cocks.

But they had quality wins against…………… absolutely no one. UF sucked. Vols sucked.

I don't know who Richt is sleeping with in the SEC scheduling dept, but he is getting his money's worth.

I hope Mizzou exposes them for the frauds they are early in the season.

No,its good ol SEC Bias once again they have all drank the SEC kool-Aid. including half the ESecPN analyst with SEC ties.Pathetic it's as though they never watch the teams west of the Mississippi play football. Can't wait!! to get our hands on one of those overhyped teams from the SEC.apparently per the ESPiN analyst their defense is the reason why their ranked ahead of the Trojans huh!!! BS did they not do their homework? we have (7) retuners on D' and their conference is anemic in their Offensive production and approach with their 3 yds.and a cloud of dust mentality.theres not one QB in the SEC that would start for any Pac-12 school.this is why their pass defenses are always ranked very high vs.the Pass, and because theres no threat of the pass they stack the box and stuff the run aiding to their bogus against the rush stats. I call this the Bull Sh!t Conference SEC= BSC = BCS .

You can say that about a lot of teams though. I don't care one way or the other for Georgia or where they are ranked, but use perspective and see who would you put above them. Rankings are an inexact science and the difference between 1 and 2 or even 1 and 5 can be very very small. The fact is that they did have double digit wins, they return most of their starters and you can make good arguments that they'd beat really any of the teams ranked below them.

  • Alabama opens with Michigan 9/1 in Dallas.

That will cement or derail its ranking.

  • I have no problem with us at #3 right now, especially with the loss of Kennard. I think Oregon should be over Oklahoma though, but whatever. Michigan at #8 and Notre Dame at 23 is suspect, as Michigan opens with Bama, so that gives Bama/sec more credibility, and it should be of note that the true experts currently have Notre Dame as a 2.5 point favorite over Michigan.

  • I would also have Washington and Utah in my top-25.

I heard that Bama is a 13 point favorite over Michigan right now. That doesn't sound like a 2 vs. 8 match up to me.

  • I'm way too lazy to go through this thread, but I heard on the radio that some coaches left USC off of their top 25. If true, there needs to be a federal investigation on this rubbish, immediately.

  • Who cares??? It doesn't matter where you start it's where you finish! So all the Trojans have to do is win every game.

So they are in control of their own destiny. If USC isn't #1 at the end of the year, it won't be anybody else fault but USC's

I have the utmost confidence that the Trojans will win the National Championship.

I'm a huge critic of the coaches poll, as it's a total farce, but the math doesn't add up in that scenario.

I just looked at the votes and ran the numbers.

SC, LSU and Bama each had roughly the same number of first place votes, and their totals were all pretty close to each other.

On most ballots, they were probably 1,2,3 in some order.

SC got 19 1st place votes. Even if every other voter but two voted SC #2, the last two voters leaving SC unranked would give SC less total points than they got in the poll. So at most, only one rouge voter could have left SC off the poll.

So it is possible that Nick Saban or Les Miles left SC out of their poll to give them a better shot at opening # 1.

    //

More likely, SC probably got 19-20 2nd and 19-20 3rd place votes, with a couple of voters ranking them 4th or 5th.

Since OU and FSU each got a first place vote, SC could certainly be 4th or 5th on those ballots.

And I'm sure there are some homer SEC coaches who voted SEC SEC SEC schools 1-5.

    //

Bottom line- no more than one coach could have left SC off of the ballot. SC has too many total points for that to be the case.

But this brings up one of the biggest problems in the coaches poll- only the final poll is made public. So these guys can make idiotic votes all year long with no one calling them out.

    //

When this poll is no longer relevant, it will be "good riddance to bad rubbish".

  • Texas keeps getting ranked when they don't deserve it too. They went 5-7 and 8-5 the last two years. I don't know what they have coming back, but they were constantly ranked in the BCS last year, besides the fact that they were 6-4, 7-4, and 7-5 at the end of the season.

They've got an elite D and big time RBs, but terrible QBs.

QBs are holding them back in a big way.

They need to figure out how to beat OU consistently also. They've lost the last two and 8 of the last 12 vs OU.
