Based on the NCAA statement if USC took Redd this year and played at 76, they could only play at 74 in the following year. If USC plays at 75 with Redd this year, next year they are able to stay at 75.

Either way, Redd would count as an initial counter and limit USC to 17 incoming players.

If he only stays one year it would seem like a waste of scholarship with limited scholarships. Max Wittex and Silas Redd played youth football together.

I rather USC not take him. A scholarship is important I want to use it on a player who will play at least three seasons. I do not want the roster at 74 players.

    Fair enough.

Give me a rb who has proven he can not only play at the next level - but excel - any day over a scholarship to be given to an unproven talent.

Kiffin though the JUCO rb was worth a ride for 2 years before he decommitted and went elsewhere.

  • I 'm not sure it's worth it. We have McNeal, DJ Morgan, Buck Allen, plus Nelson Agholor, and both Soma Vainuku, and Jahleel Pinner can run like a TB/HB. So what's the point, and if we go after him as a usable RB to be confident in for this year, what's that say about our current players who have already been learning our system?

It says that none of them is a top 10 caliber back in the country like Silas Redd, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

USC would be downright insane to turn Redd down if he wants to come here.

Redd would be a huge get at one of the two positions where SC is thin.

I would much prefer to go All-In and load up for a run at the NC this year with Redd (and DT Jordan Hill if they can get him also), and then play with a roster of 74 or 73 guys next year, which is going to be a rebuilding year anyway.

Playing with 1 or 2 less players in 2013 isn't going to change the overall trajectory of that season.

But adding guys like Redd and Hill at RB and DT could make the difference between winning a NC or not.

And iff D. Rodgers doesn't qualify this year, then SC wouldn't even lose a slot next year by bringing in Redd.

Well worth it to get Redd on the team either way.

I think the staff should take Silas and end the class with Hatcher.

They will add a true Junior to the backfield which is much needed, and honestly if USC is out of it for VH3 and Willis than I'd rather see them use the roster spot to add someone who can really contribute this year and help USC win a NC.

That is not a knock on any of the other elite DB's in this recruiting cycle either. I would love for USC to sign all of them. But if im LK I'd seriously think about that scenario.

    Totally agree. Upvote for you.

    That math is correct.

Except that instead of getting an unproven HS recruit (albeit with great potential) who couldn't start contributing until 2013, SC would be adding a proven, highly productive college player who put up very good numbers on a team with NO passing attack who could contribute this year by fortifying a crucial position.

USC needs all hands on deck to take this year to take their best shot at winning a NC. Redd would be a great addition.

    Felix! Big props to you!

You were the FIRST person to bring up Redd's name yesterday when we started kicking around the possibility of USC being able to pick up a couple of transfers from PSU.

I didn't know his game at the time, but I said if you thought he was worth getting that was all I needed to know and that I wanted SC to go after him.

Having done some research since then, I can only say, "You nailed it again, my friend."thumbsup

  • Originally I was against taking any PSU players, but thinking about it again, Redd would be a big addition. It would also allow Nelson to focus only on playing WR, which would be great for his development

  • If we can get him, take him now, especially when we have to play Oregon twice this year and we will need as many top level fresh bodies as we can get. McNeil is great, but even he needs a spell.

If he leaves next year, at least we dont have to worry about playing Oregon until the conference championship game and we will have our RB situation steady by then.

I said before that I dont see many people taking a flyer on a junior or senior from PSU for the sheer fact that they will only get the benefit of one year, maybe two, and then a 'penalty' of being short, but in this case, this hired gun could be the difference in winning the MNC, so it may be worth it.

Redd's name was brought up in rebuttal in conjunction with Hackenberg and Johnson (both 2013), in the thread that said there were no players USC would recruit prior to the sanctions announcement. Insofar as 2013, given his good academics, strong family support (Dad ex-Marine), and 1000 yard season last year, there was an assumption at PSU, that he would leave for the NFL after 2012 and prob have finished his degree. So there might not be any reduction of the 75 in 2013. Still props to the Cat for breaking news of USC's intent

Even if Redd left after one season (or if SC also brought in a SR like DT Jordan Hill), the 2013 team would still play with one less scholarship per PSU player added this year over the 75 limit.

The reduction is due to playing with extra players from PSU this year, so it doesn't matter how long the player stays at USC.

And IMO that 2013 reduction is well worth it to add Redd and hopefully Hill for this year's title run.

  • Disclaimer: This could be worthless info.

Tennessee fans are claiming that they saw something about Redd having to sit out a year if he transfers to a school on probation. I have no clue where they got it from, and highly doubt that it's true. But... you never know?

I also doubt Kiff would pursue Redd if he would have to sit out a year. And why would Redd even be interested in that? He loses a year of playing time; if he just stayed at Penn State this year he could jump to the NFL.
