I still believe that the simplist, most believable explanation is this - the student-managers work closely with the quarterback and know his preferences. This manager felt that the balls were overinflated. He let a little air out, too much. The refs were notified, they reinflated 3 of the 6 balls there and then, and then the other two at the half (which leads me to believe that the deflation was at a level that wasn't easily noticed by everyone who handled the footballs). An honest mistake, but the manager was fired because A) he should not have messed with the balls after they'd been cleared by the refs, for any reason, B) his mistake resulted in a reprimand and fine by the Pac-12.

Lane didn't fire this kid. He didn't even talk to him about the incident; compliance made sure of that.
No, student managers are not paid. They are volunteer positions. They get gear, some meals during the season, and sometimes get per diem (cash - about $20) when the players do. Otherwise, the only benefit of being a manager is the fact that you're a part of the team, you're on the sidelines for every home game, and you generally are able to get to travel with the team for 2 away games (the head manager goes to all away games). Managers also get similar bowl gifts as the players if the team makes it to a bowl game.
The only student manager that gets any compensation (beyond the above and beyond the above) is the head manager, who gets a full tuition scholarship.
