USC Student Manager Deflated Game Balls

  • jpw said...

    It's on ESPN. It's legit.

LOL. Good thing ESPN never picks up bogus "sources are reporting" headlines. Nah that never happens. The point is still the same...it's put under rumors headlines with no author willing to stake his or her name to the "story."

It's not a rumor. They fired the kid for a reason (to cover their own butt). That being said, you guys can go on and on debating whether there is an advantage gained by deflating your footballs. That doesn't matter. What matters is that the NCAA has minimum psi rule for game balls and USC intentionally deflated balls to below the minimum. There was intent, and it was against the rules.

TW, Kiffin is talking about it right now. The story is accurate.

    ‏@insidetroy
Regarding deflated football Kiffin said situation was brought to his attention Sunday.

    ‏@insidetroy
Kiffin said he didn't know why it was done. It was done in plain sight on Oregon sideline. Compliance investigated.

    @insidetroy
Kiffin said no coaches or Matt Barkley had any knowledge of the situation.

    @insidetroy
Kiffin said it would be harder for Barkley to throw or kickers to kick balls that were inflated to different levels. #USC

    @insidetroy
Kiffin said league never told #USC coaches. At half refs tested balls and some were not inflated properly. They were fixed.

This whole thing is stupid IMO. If it was any other school or any other coach it would be a non-issue. As it stands, everyone wants to blame Kiffin even though there is no evidence he had anything to do with it.

    Such is the world.

And we were reprimanded and fined. What do you want?

(Also, does anyone believe that the Pac-12 wouldn't take the chance to stick Kiffin if they could? They themselves stated that the staff was unaware.)

And oregon has always followed the rules...what you say is true though, it's a rule, and the rule was broken. We need to find out the full story, but the fact that you emphatically state that "USC intentionally deflated balls..." vs one individual, speaks more to your agenda, rather than waiting till all facts are in before throwing stones from your glass house.

This is exactly why I have zero respect for float fans...you have a thread on your own cesspool of a forum, you should keep it there with the rest of the tiny brains that populate that site.

Concern yourselves with the next opponent, since you won..and worry like hell if you come up against a team with a stout defense. You don't have that, better hope your offense can carry your team on their shoulders against those big 'ol SEC defensive guys.

What matters is that the NCAA has rules that don't allow schools to pay a recruits handler money to get the recruits signature. Oregon didn't pay 25,000 for just information and videos. There was intent, and it was against the rules.

  • this doesn't really make sense.

The refs caught 3 under inflated balls before the game began, and 2 more at half? Doesn't sound like, initially at least, the refs thought it was intentional.

Barkley and receivers at USC don't need this. It probably hurts them unless Barkley has been practicing throwing under inflated balls.

I am guessing this was a mistake by a knucklehead student manager. Why USC was fined and reprimanded is probably because Haden finally had enough of the defensive holding calls on our receivers to say something and Larry Scott fired back with this.

  • @RHaylock
#USC Kiffin says he understands the conspiracy theorists but the balls were deflated on the #Oregon sideline on plain view

"If I were Pat Hayden, the USC AD, I would be looking to fire whomever deflated the balls of the USC Defense - this was the real cause of their loss."

Your defense wasn't so hot either...certainly not championship caliber...our team scored 51 points on your mighty, "our best defense in years" ever defense.

Take that back to your cesspool.

So let me get this straight Chip paid the student 25,000 to deflate the balls, then Chip went over to the refs at half time and suggested to them that they should check the balls. It makes sense.

I don't see any inaccuracies in this report ... if so ... someone point them out?

Have you ever read or heard of a DIV 1 team being fined for tampering with game balls before? Ever.

Not saying Lane knew of this, but when you keep adding up the gamesmanship stuff Lane is doing it would not seem a far step for a team manager to think he could pull one himself.
It is all about tone set by the coach.

It was clearly a stupid little mistake blown way out of proportion.

  • Welp, we found a way back on the front page of yahoo sports.

Seems stupid to me and seems like the kind of things Tennesse fans warned us of that we brushed off and labeled as desperate attempts to discredit to mask their pain.

No way the kid did that on his own, no way at all.

Totally agree. It was chip idea. The student was on Oregon sidelines during the game

You know everyone is just piling on lane because everyone's eyes are on him. Every single LITTLE deed is magnified twenty times. Listen to what everyone is whining about:

    He walks out on interviews
    He changed a jersey number
He said he wouldn't vote USC #1
Kicked Scott Wolfe out (I would have done it anyway just for shits and giggles)

Compare that to UNC, Auburn, Miami, Florida:

False classes setup for grades and a host of other academic cheating questions
Paid 200K to a players father, got caught for it
Miami... not enough time for me to type it all, but hookers and yachts pretty much sums it up
Pouncey getting the Reggie Bush treatment
    Anything else I missed?sarcasm

I mean c'mon, they are trying to get the fanbase to flip on Lane so they have a cool story to write about.

Please just watch the video. Dan Weber explains it simply and effectively. Non-issue. Seriously.

In any case, if this was some grand conspiracy to gain some competitive advantage then I'd be more upset that we are clearly so BAD at cheating.

Kid deflates the balls on the Oregon sideline, in plain view of the entire Oregon staff, and you think he was purposefully doing something illegal? Come on.

Yes. Chip wins football games. So it is what it is.

But I disapprove of his ways and much of his attitude and of his rivarly-killing ways.

And I think Phil Knight's company is a disgrace to my alma mater and profits off of a victimized and brutalized labor force.

So what? I get downvoted on my own board when I bring this stuff up. I was just bringing up ONE discussion UT1 and I had a LONG time ago.
