USC Recruiting Nugget (8/5)

    Deetj13,

    How is the cal coach?

Don't get me wrong, Cal has an excellent coach who is also well respected. He is, after all, the head coach for the US Women's team. However, he is known as a bit of a traditionalist, which is fine if you are a distance swimmer. As much as people may want to make a big deal about the Cal coach heading up the Women's team, the overall Head Coach of the US team is Mark Shubert - former head coach at USC.

Since Peter Daland retired back in the early 90's, USC has been well know for using innovative training techniques that are customized for each individual athlete. It is also the home for many, many international swimmers including Canada, France, Tunisia, Holland, etc.

The Trojan Club team, also coached by the same staff, if not THE best club team in the US, it is easily in the top 5.

I know it won't be a factor here, but for the good of the order...

Not only is Teri a proud Trojan, but she comes from one of the greatest athletic dynasties in our school's history:

"A former USC All-American herself, she competed in the NCAA Championships meet all four years while at USC and helped the Trojans to four consecutive NCAA top-10 finishes. She earned All-America honors in both 1980 and 1981. As a senior in 1983, McKeever was named USC's Outstanding Student-Athlete. She worked as an assistant coach at USC from 1984-87, helping develop several All-Americans.

The Southern California product graduated from USC in 1983 with a B.S. in education with two teaching credentials (multiple subject, secondary life science) and also earned a masters degree in athletic administration in 1987. McKeever's father, Mike, was an All-American lineman for the Trojans' football team in 1959. "

Didn't know about Teri's deep SC roots....feeling so conflicted now pukeface

Teri McKeever is a she not a "he", but that is an ambiguous name.

Yeah...but it's a small world in collegiate athletics.

That was from her Cal website bio, but her dad's twin brother, Marlin, was better known. He was also an All-American, but became a 1st round pick...played in the NFL for 13 seasons (Rams, Vikings, Redskins & Eagles) and made a Pro Bowl.

Bottom line is, if I had to put my money on Missy choosing one of those schools, I'd put it on Cal. I'll be thrilled if she chooses USC, but Cal is currently the back-to-back men and women's NCAA champs, and they just pulled in the highest ranked swimming recruiting class in history (not Cal history, but NCAA history). That is hard to beat. I also read that her parents really value academics, and although I think most would agree that in reality the academics at both Cal and USC are on par with each other, I think "Berkeley" as an academic brand still has more prestige attached to it than USC's academic brand. Edge to Cal.

Here's to eating my words in the near future though! pray
