This Saturday at the Coliseum; Let your love flow

  • Some of us we there in the LA Coliseum in 1974 when the USC Trojans were down 24-0 to ND with a minute to go in the first half. Don't think for a moment that anyone there thought USC was going to score 55 points on the best defense in the country in the next 17 minutes of play. But it happened.

USC RB Anthony Davis took a swing pass from Pat Haden into the end zone to end the 1st half. At the start of the 2nd half Davis took the 2nd half KO back 102 yards for a TD. And then on the USC KO ND returner Mark McLane came out of the end zone and went sideways on the eight yard line. USC's Dave Lewis just blew him up. They never found the kid. Lewis hit him so hard he vaporized right into the Coliseum floor.

There was an empty seat on the ND team bus.

The Coliseum let their love flow. Everyone was on their feet for the rest of the game, and I've never heard so much noise in my entire life. My ears hurt and my heart leaped with joy. The USC football team was lifted to a level of play that I had never seen before in sports. I've never seen anything like ti since. It was other worldly. The Trojan fans just let their love and belief flow. And instead of expecting the worst everyone was expecting the best.

It was magic. The game now was being played in a different place, by two different teams, in front of a different crowd. Miracles happen when you believe.

I knew that day that a crowd can lift a team just as a team can lift a crowd. I saw with my own eyes how high a team and a crowd can be lifted.

The USC football team and it's fan climbed Everest in 1974, and they didn't need oxygen.

Let's give the Trojans a lift a the Coliseum tomorrow against Arizona.

Let's let the love flow and see how high it can take USC and it's fans.

  • I'm going to let my love flow from the WF55C OC Chapter HQs ..plenty of Scottish/viking rituals and maybe some street football in the cul-de-sac with the all neighbor kids as ALLTIME QB ( they are getting better and I am getting worse) and will be in the mix... maybe a few adult beverages but nothing too spectacular or Rock star for me these days....

    Fight on...to Victory!
    Beat the' cats!

I'm gonna LET LOVE RULE and wear a dreadlock wig like Kravitz and set it on fire for the postgame after partay!!!!

  • I think now would be a great time to discuss Morley Drury who was THE NOBLEST TROJAN OF THEM ALL .....and the 1927 8-1-1 Trojans...( damn you Notre Dame and tie vs 'furd)
This very weekend on Oct 1 1927 ..the Trojans defeated the Santa Clara Broncos and their mascot Bucky the Bronco 52 to 12...EPIC times at the LA Memorial Coliseum ..

Morley went richter on the broncos...on his way to a 1000 yard rushing season.

Lets hear it for Morley !!! And lets get Noble !!!! Fight On !!!

    Beat the 'Cats..

Still haven't figured out what Drury is doing in this photo ..but it's incredible !

  • I have told the story of listening to my grandfathers ( USC' 32) album of the 74 game at his house in Downey as a child ...and I do own a VHS copy of it ...( the game was played when I was 2 years old)

it's pretty much CRUCIAL that anyone that calls themself a Trojan fan become familiar with the game if they are not already ..tops the 2005 ND by a hair I'd say as the #1 USC game ever ..

The loudest I ever heard the Coliseum in person ..was when I was a kick ass 9 year old for USC vs OU ..#1 vs #2 ..
When Cornwell caught that game winner ....eardrums bled !!! AWESOME !!! Marcus Allen got his 200 yards of course ...epic game !!!!Little piece of my childhood ( that was rad) with dad (USC 62' RIP ) and my favorite uncle Bill ( RIP) ..WHAT A DAY... !!!!

USC winning touchdown vs Oklahoma, 1981

Memorable finish to rare and highly anticipated regular season #1 vs. #2 meeting, on September 26, 1981 in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. #1 USC benefited from 10 Oklahoma fumbles, 5 lost, to overcome a 24-14 deficit in the final 8 minutes and win, 28-24. Famous game, although neither team lived up to the ranking as the season progressed. Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles on the commentary.

    Absolutely epic post.

    Love your writing, oldtime.

That '74 game (Beating ND in such a spectacular way, AD's epic performance) turned me into a Trojan fan for life.

I was nine years old, and it made quite an impression. (The Song Girls made quite an impression, too. thumbsup)
