The SEC SOS, thanks to Bama we know it is a Myth

  • I posted this on the blue board, (I'm sure they won't like it, but sometimes the truth hurts).
    After hearing how many of the SEC folks actually believe that they shouldn't have to play anybody because the SEC is so tough, I just couldn't resist.

    What a joke Alabama's schedule has been since 1990.
    They only played 7 more elite teams (10+ win teams) in conference than USC did over the 22 years.
    Clearly, playing 1 harder conference game every 3 years, shouldn't allow you to schedule so weak OOC.

    Here is a comparison of Alabama & USC schedule going back to 1990.
    No postseason games are considered here, since the debate about SOS is what determines how gets picked for BCS bowls and with the new selection committee format coming soon, it will be more debated than ever 2 years from now.

    Sorry, but there was no way to do this without creating a super long post, so I'll just put the results here first, and then I'll just throw down all the games after so you can see for yourself, if you are interested in this.

    The results: Bama's conf schedule makes up some ground, but not nearly enough, as there was only a 7 game advantage for the Tide over 22 years in the amount of 10 game winning teams each team faced.

    Bama's non-existent OOC schedule and USC's willingness to take on anybody is what gives USC a giant edge in SOS over Alabama. USC played approx 2 seasons worth of games (24) 147-123, more than Alabama did against winning teams. The fact that Alabama's win at Penn St this year was their only win on the road vs an AQ winning team since 1990, almost seems to incredible to be true. Sad, but true.

    Those were bowl games, and he said he wasn't counting those since SOS is determined before the bowls.

    Yup, and 5 of the 10 were against Non AQ teams = they split 2 games at Hawaii, and the other 3 vs teams
    with losing records- La-Lafayette, Memphis, and 2-9 Tulane.

    Here's something that will put some perspective on these numbers.
    It takes a little while to get there, but stay with me for a second and check this out:

    ***
    Since the BCS Era began in 1998, the 12 teams from the SEC have won a combined total
    of 46 OOC games vs AQ teams with a winning record. (No bowl/postseason games included)

    Take out the SEC's top dawg, Georgia, who had 12 of the wins and it leaves you with =

    11 SEC teams = 34 wins. (34-73)

    Since 1990, USC has won 24 games OOC vs AQ teams with a winning record.
    Now, add in USC's 10 Bowl wins vs AQ teams since 1990 and you have a total of 34 wins.

    1- USC = 34 wins (34-18-1)

    USC played 81 games OOC since 1990, (81 + 22 years of potential bowl games)
    minus 4 years (2 yrs banned, 2 yrs under .500) is 81 + 18 = approx 99 games

    The 11 SEC teams, with an approx avg of 48 OOC games per team since 1998 =
    approx 528 games.

    ***
    That means in less than 100 scheduling opportunities (i.e. games) since 1990,
    USC was able to beat the same amount of winning AQ teams, 34,
    as 11 SEC schools beat combined during OOC regular season play since 1998.
    With USC needing approx 429 FEWER scheduling opportunities than those 11 SEC schools to do it!

    I had no idea that the pollsters, computer rankers, and rating systems had picked USC so much more often than Alabama as national champion.

    I don't agree with all of it, but hey it's the consensus and the majority of the selectors and pollsters think over the last century that USC is the lord of the rings.

    Of course, I already knew that, but its just that much better when 75% of the college football world says the same thing.
