Scholarship benefits over walk-on question

  • Does anybody know what benefits scholarship players get versus walk ons. I think one of them is access to the Galen Center dining room.

I ask because after passing/losing out on the two defensive backs we may be going defensive line. Therefore, we possibly could use another defensive back and there is a great walk-on candidate.

Jahmere Irvin-Sills two friends/teammates (Rogers and Bigelow) are both coming to USC next year, as is his adopted brother in a couple years. His adopted dad rumordly has millions of dollars and therefore may be willing to pay a few hundred k for his adopted son to go to school with his brother and friends. It might only be a couple years tuition/reduced benefits when the 85 scholarships open up later on.

It seems like a win/win situation and it's completely legal for kids with BCS level athletic scholarship offers like Markowitz to turn them down, let dad pay or get academic scholarships and walk-on at a better school. The only drawback is maybe the prestige of an academic scholarship and the supposed benefits scholarship players get such as Galen Dining Center. Anyone know how nice the other benefits non-walk-ons get are?

  • I was talking to a couple of incoming freshmen at orientation that were walking on, and they said they get full access to the McKay Center, academic advisors, and all that stuff. I think as long as you're on the team, you get the benefits that come with it.

Good to know USC Shaq, thanks for the info.

It seems like it might not be bad to have Sills walk on.

  • a friend of mine is a walk-on on the team, and he said that they basically have the same benefits as scholarship athletes on the team. the only reason i could see of a player saying no to walking on to free up a scholarship is that they don't want to be seen as a "walk-on" since its assumed you're not as good as the other players. just my opinion.

Irvin-Sills is committed to Auburn, he's not going anywhere to be a walk-on.

So, he has an slow, plain fiance without much of a personality who he hasn't known for a long time, and is not willing to consider a single, smart, cool supermodel instead, just because she has one flaw his fiance doesn't?

I think it's more than that. I was under the impression that walk-ons don't get training table meals unless they pay, for one thing. C'mon, guys, help us out here.

  • There is a huge difference in the quality and access to female talent. Trust me: you'd much rather have scholarship tail.

  • His adopted brother wouldn't be David Sills, would it?

In any event, the kid looks like he's going to Auburn.

It's not like he is going to Utah State. It's not happening.
