Receivers lobby for Keary Colbert as receivers coach

    From the article:

"RT if you want @kearycolbert to become our new receiver coach,” tweeted All-American Robert Woods.

Reached by phone Wednesday, Colbert said he had not been contacted by Kiffin. Asked whether he would be interested in the job, he said, “I don’t want to say one way or the other. I have a love and passion for SC and a history as a player and as a coach. I’m definitely tied into everything that happens within it.”

Colbert said it was “completely humbling” to have players request his return, but added, “It’s kind of foolish to think a job is going to be presented. I don’t want to speculate or assume anything.

“It’s an attractive place to be because of my history there but there are a lot of other factors.... I’m not going to try and project the future. It’s Coach Kiffin’s program.”

  • Can anyone offer a fair assessment of how he would rate as a candidate?

I'd love to have him if he's a good fit, but I don't want to let memories get in the way of developing our players...and recruiting future ones!

  • Personally think its smart to take a guys who's young, completed years as a GA, at a position coach which your head coach has experience in working and has the ties to SC where you wouldn't need to worry about him leaving quickly.

This is a guy who was out of the league of a couple of years and still made a comeback -- see Tiki Barber for the opposite story.

I think it would be a great hire...but it is up to CLFK

  • Would be a welcomed hire but is Keary ready to be done with the NFL?

he doesnt sound done. and in my opinion this would be a great hire. he is young enough to relate to kids and he doesnt have enough coaching experience to bolt within a year or two if he comes, he'll be here for a while, continuity is only a bad thing if he cannot coach but everyone sang his praises when he was here as a GA.

  • i think it would be a great hire some of the recievers know him and how he works plus like above post he is young and can relate to recruits kind of like Tosh from Cal/UW but whatever CLK wants to hire is all good to me !

  • There would be no one better IMO.

We have had some great people come through this program in the last 10 years, and we REALLY have some high character guys now, but Keary is as good as it gets.

From his interview above, it sounds like he would be if he was offered a spot as the receivers coach at SC. If he's as good as he was reputed to be when he was a GA, I think he'd be an excellent hire.

  • wolf man is reporting that CLK told him he wasn't a candidate about a year ago
Maybe that's the reason for the cryptic answer

  • Keary had a great four years as a WR at USC. He also had a decent NFL career.
The fact that he was a GA at SC before can only help.

Also, I like the fact that he was a 4-year guy at USC. It shows the value of getting your diploma; the fact that the NFL is not forever and you need to think about post-football careers even while in college.

If Kiffin doesn't hire him as WRs coach, any chance he comes back as a GA again?

In the same post Scott Wolf said he thinks Nick Holt would be a good pick for linebackers coach. He also reported that Rocky Seto turned down Lane Kiffin for the linebacker coach position.

  • How many people currently in favor of this hire were adamantly opposed to Pete Carroll turning USC into a place where green coaches could receive OJT?

USC is a destination job. I would love to have KC return to coach at USC one day, but would prefer that he cut his coaching teeth on someone else's dime for a few years before returning.

What if he cut his teeth as a GA, working under a longer-tenured WR coach?

I think it really depends on position.

The WR coach is usually a position that allows for greener coaches. If you have been a WR coach for a long time without any type of promotion, that isn't a good sign. It also helps that LK has experience as a WR coach. USC can also go after a greener DB coach because of Monte.

One other thing to remember is that PC hired green coaches without any NFL experience. There is a major difference in my eyes between hiring someone with little coaching experience who has been in the NFL for 5 years and someone who hasn't at all.

Ken Norton Jr. worked out all right.

Not a problem, but a co-pilot has different responsibilities than a pilot. I would be more in favor of watching KC become a pilot at a smaller program before flying solo at USC.

Now don't get me wrong, because I wouldn't freak out if he was hired, but he wouldn't be at the top of my list.

    A proven coach and recruiter.

OC and DC are different that positional coaches.

I was curious about this, so I just did some research. Here is a list of some of the young coaches Pete hired while he was at 'SC, with the experience they had prior to coaching for the Trojans. Note that Sark was here twice, so I listed his experience - including USC - prior to his second stint with Pete's staff. Lane's experience only includes his work prior to his first time at USC.

    John Morton
    - Oakland Raiders (8 years)
    - University of San Diego (1 year)
    - New Orleans Saints (1 year)
    - Played in the CFL 1995-1996
    - Played in the WLAF 1997

    Dave Watson
    - Southwest Minnesota State (2 years)
    - Michigan State (1 year)

    Lane Kiffin
    - Fresno State (2 years - student assistant)
    - Colorado State (1 year)
    - Jacksonville Jaguars (1 year)

    Steve Sarkisian
    - El Camino JC (1 year)
    - USC (3 years)
    - Oakland Raiders (1)

Isn't he Lane Kiffin's brother in law? The family has SEC ties that is why he did not come with him to USC.
