RB Greg Bryant and SC

  • AbsenteeTrojan said...

Is anyone else worried about Bryant's lack of speed?

He's elusive as hell, but for some reason Emmanuel Moody comes to mind in comparison to Bryant.

Moody was our best back as a freshman, so I'd be just fine with that. His departure overshadowed how good he was here; yes, there was a lack of top end speed but he had great vision and shiftiness that overcame that.

I think Bryant and Davis are the likely RB class. Isaac would be the staff's top choice but it's going to be a real battle to get him out of the midwest with ND, Michigan, and OSU all making him a priority. If we can add him as well, so much the better but I'd hardly scoff at Bryant and Davis.

    He's a power back at 5'11" 190 lbs?

He's already pretty built... I can't see him adding another 20 lbs. So that's the issue IMO... he'll be a shifty 200 pound 'power back' without breakaway speed. That sounds like Emmanuel Moody to me. He'll be able to help the team, but I'm wondering if he can be a big impact player, that's all.

Bryant isn't 190. He's about between 205 to 210 as a Jr in high school. So yes, he's a power back

    He's also not 5'11(probably 5'9" tops), unless American Heritage's entire OL is 6'6"+. He has a Trent Richardson-esque frame, he's a tank.

  • While he would be a good get, if we only take 2 Rb's, I would prefer Davis and Isaac. Isaac is exactly what we need in a rb.

  • I would really like to add D.J. Martin to this class as the power back. That kid is a freaking beast!

USC is a powerful place that Lane Kiffin is ruining.

I believe DJ will be a late offer because of his background. He was great during his sophomore year but needs more film because of being suspended most of last season. I like him and think he'll eventually be our second back in this class. Davis is first of course.

With the kind of EE talent available, I'm hoping the sign 5-6 EE guys.

Even though only 3 will count towards 2012, it will give the coaching staff a margin for error if some of the kids don't qualify in time, and if all 5 or 6 qualify and get on campus early, then all the better, as they will all get that much of a head start on their SC careers.

Watching his highlights. Did anybody else think that he has a very short stride when he runs? Maybe it's just me.

I noticed it as well and kept thinking, "This guy needs to spend a little time with a track coach" so there may be some upside there. He has a very muscular build and that might be giving him a little tightness in the legs. It might also just be the way the kid is built - as others have pointed out he is definitely a tank.

He honestly looks more like a fullback than a runningback to me but those a junior highlights and he will likely get a little bigger, a little faster, and a little stronger. Above all else I trust the staff's evaluation. If they want him - that's more than good enough for me (although I admit I was never very high on DJ Foster).

he's a football player not a track star once again theres a difference in the amount of speed needed in both sports, football is played in 5yd.-10yd. increments/burst not 100-200m sprints hence the 10 yd shuffle drills.in football ,I don't know what film you guys are watching ? but he appeard to be out running the defensive CB angles they had on him on a few of his breakaway TD's , from my experience u can't be slow and out run angles like that on the football field,he has quick feet, great vision ,and natural RB instincts along with swirving hips ,he 's the real deal and will only get better ,his strides look small because he has big thighs for his size ,which is good for a strong base or COG allows him to stop on the dime and re-start he would be a nice get for SC.

My comments came not only from what LOOKS to be a little RELATIVE slowness in straightaway speed but (more importantly) also from some of the stutter steps that preceed his cuts. He seems to lack elusiveness to my eye. Of course, it should go without saying that it's hard to judge speed from film and especially without knowing the quality of the competition he is playing against. If he's going to come in with a 4.6 or better 40 then I agree he's a big back. Slower than that and he's more of a fullback/goalline type back. This isn't to say we don't need that kind of back to complement the more elusive guys. It's just how his film looks to me and I'm simply giving an honest appraisal of what I see. As I said previousl - there isn't a coaching staff in the countrywhose evaluations I trust more so if he's good enough for Kiffin and company than he's more than good enough for me.
