Pete Carroll and his Recruiting Decisions

  • I always found the Gable situation to be an interesting one. Much like Lee now, I thought he should've played defense coming in but showed a ton of promise carrying the ball as a freshman. After that he had some niggling injuries and such but more than anything, he just seemed to level off. He looked to be a little overweight, had some issues holding onto the ball, and then just didn't get many opportunities.

Do you honestly believe he would have gotten 759 rushing attempts in those four years at USC?

If so, then USC missed out. If not, then you have a tough case to make that he was better than what we had.

After all, 4.1 and 4.3 ypc for rushing attempts as a junior and senior are HIS numbers. As Bill Parcells likes to say, you are what your numbers say they are [paraphrased]

As you well know, stats are often times misleading. In his first season alone, he scored 11 of his 13 tds against the likes of North Texas state, Tulsa, Baylor (0-7 in B12) and lowly Utah state (2-10).

5 of his 13td's alone came against North Texas.

Wake me up when I'm supposed to be impressed with those numbers against teams that finished the season with records of 2-10, 2-10, 3-9 and 10-4 Tulsa.

Yeah. If I had to compare him to any back it would be George Farmer now. They are both tall, fast backs who run straight lines until someone touches him. I'm optimistic Farmer can and will be a better RB than DeMarco Murray but Murray doesn't strike me as overly impressive and one big game doesn't change that. He hadn't looked good at all in any game before this one and my Dad is an avid Cowboys fan so I watch a lot of them.

We took Moody, Gable, and Stafon that year. I think Murray (before knee surgery) was clearly better than Moody and Gable. In fact Gable should have been recruited at DB. Gable was a great high school safety. I chalk this up to a mistake in evaluation. But I also know, the coaches can not be right every time.

Hindsight being 2020, it's tough to say.

In his first year alone, he got the third most carries on the roster (127) behind Alan Patrick(173) and Chris Brown (158). That number seems to suggest he was racking up big numbers in garbage time.

Oklahoma's top three rushers had 458 attempts that year. Conversely, USC's top three rushers combined for 387 attempts.

Racking up big numbers primarily against scrubs doesn't make the case that he was better than any of the running back USC had recruited that year, though.

Matter-of-fact, he wasn't even the feature runner until his junior season, in which his stats line was 282-1214 4.3 ypc and 15 td's.

Both years he was the feature back at Oklahoma, He averaged under 4.4 ypc. Remind me again of why we should be wringing our hands at losing this guy?

Truth be told, this thread wouldn't even exist if he didn't put up huge numbers in one-game in the NFL.
