Oregon spring game highlights

  • Thought you SC guys might want to check this out. DAT, Barner, Lyerla etc. barely played, mostly reserves (rbs are all walk ons) but it showcased the QB competition between Bennett and Mariota. A lot of us like Mariota a lot, but both are very athletic. Enjoy. :)

  • Our weaknesses this year will be depth at RB (paper thin), and we still lack that big play receiver that you guys have in abundance, tight end is also very thin and inexperienced though Lyerla is a beast.

    jpsmith00

  • Why the down votes? I just thought you guys might be interested, I'm interested in how you guys are looking. Oh well (shrug).

    jpsmith00

  • The QB's look pretty good... Me'antho still looks tiny. Is he seeing time at the CB position?

  • Cool, thanks. What does your secondary depth chart look like? If game one was tomorrow, is this how the starters would look?-

    CB- Terrance Mitchell
    CB- Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
    FS- John Boyett
SS- Brian Jackson (or something like that?)

I got you. Some people here are a little ridiculous with their Oregon hate (cue the down votes for this post).

  • Ya, impressed by the QBs. D'Anthony looked good as well.

No defensive reps at all for DAT, most of us are concerned he's going to have to take a lot of carries at RB since we pretty much just have Barner, and he hasn't been the most durable dude the past 2 years. DAT is still very small, I doubt he'll ever crack 180.

Yeah that's what I think too, the secondary looks very solid, with some decent reserves. Ifo has improved greatly in the offseason.

  • jpsmith, who appears to be the frontrunner at this point? I kind of assumed Bennett was pretty locked in

Lol, your RB situation looks worse than ours which is bad considering how run heavy you guys are. Those transfers are looking bad for you guys. Is it seriously just Barner and DAT at RB? Looks like that Marshall kid is going to have hit the ground running. To bad for you guys he didn't enroll early. Could have made all the difference

  • I watched the game on Saturday... Honestly I wasn't impressed with the QBs.

Bennett looks like he won't be able to sit in the pocket and throw the ball. He also looks like he'll get broken after a few big hits.

In Mariota's long run, you had a safety with a clear tackle stop for some unknown reason. That's the problem with running QBs and "no contact" on QBs... You can't tell if they can actually run well because the defense doesn't take two-hand touch seriously. Is Mariota fast? Yes. Can he be a successful QB? We can't tell from the spring game.

Yeah we're definitely in trouble at RB, no one expected Tra Carson to bail on us. If Marshall isn't ready to go we're in deep trouble, they might have to throw Bralon Addison in there just to provide some depth. It's definitely a problem.

I think everyone assumed Bennett, then Mariota had a huge day in the spring game. But no one can watch practice so we really have no idea what's going on with them other than what the players and coaches say.

Yeah the no contact doesn't give a true picture certainly. I do like Mariota's speed, and he's an accurate passer, and pretty cool customer in the pocket. Bennett seemed to break down mentally as the offense sputtered and Mariota surged. That was a bit of a red flag to me.

Just from watching the highlights Mariota looked pretty good but obviously you would have gotten way more of a feel from watching the whole game.

  • You've got some playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, not so sure about your D though. DAT is going to be DAT, and Bennett is going to be a good player for the Duckies, but I think we have the team speed on D to mitigate those threats. Should be another good game this year.

It's really going to come down to injuries, if you guys are healthy in November I don't think we can win.

That's cool. I figured he would see a little time at the CB spot. Might be a blessing for you guys as he will probably stay all 4 years if he stays on the O side of the ball. Not many incentives to leave early as a buck sixty RB/slot WR.

Yeah it's really not a smart decision for him to play offense if the NFL is his ultimate goal. He'd have been a top 10 pick if he'd decided to play corner.

It happens.. We've had some cats make the same decisions IMO. Rojo, our WR from a few year back probably would have been better served to stay at CB outta high school. Who knows though....

Are you guys going to have a decent WR core this year? It seemed like your O really struggled to get the ball vertical, outside of the short horizontal stuff with tons of yac.

Mariota's completion percentage was a little over 70 should have been higher, but we have a freshman tight end that has hands of stone (one ball Mariota literally hit him in the face), Bennett's was around 60, Mariota had about 100 yards rushing, most of it on that long run.

Couldn't agree more. Tony Dungy lives in Eugene now right? He should go and tell DAT and Arik that every coach around the country recommended the other side of the ball for a reason and that it's not going to change with NFL scouts.

I don't think so, unless BJ Kelley develops quickly, we had high hopes for the freshman class last year but they don't appear to be standing out. Should be better than last year but we won't have anyone close to Lee, Woods, and Farmer...hell who does?

Did Huff play in the Spring game?
