What is written isn't always the truth, but it was the only way to spin it if Torian was going to end up at UCLA.
Imagine how Torian would be received by his teammates and the UCLA fans (if they exist) if the family publicly said "Torain wants USC, family wants UCLA, Torian is attending UCLA."
The dad was posting on BRO. He wanted UCLA.

The reason why Torians parents were shocked is because they knew he wanted to go to UCLA. Torian decided at the studio to announce for USC because he knew thats what his parents wanted. They could see he was depressed afterwards and let him go where he felt more comfortable.

Artful Dodger post:"Circumstances surrounding a university can be so much different today than it was 20-30 years ago when a recruit's parents made their decision to go to a certain college. Recruits identify with coaches, other players that are committing to a college you favor, quality of education, academic area you want to concentrate on, momentum of a football program, recent track record, chances of going to a major bowl, chance of playing early, and a million other variables are more important in the choice of a university than just "dad went there".
But Carlisle's dad did choose USC after he was treated poorly by Stanford, later he chose ND, not Purdue where he is employed, and in his case and McCarthy's it wasn't guidance but direction and decision. The same for Wilson (lineman from FL) a couple of years ago, plus Hazelton, Moody even Robey coming west.
The point is, I was responding to your blanket statement that things have changed. They haven't changed: some parents guide, or let their child choose, some choose or force. I fail to see how that is different from the seventies. It is especially true for 1st/2nd generation Asian-Americans whose parents are still forcefully guiding their children into professions and schools.

White's father was a big ucla fan, posted on their board frequently. Parents thought he was picking UCLA. Torian wanted USC but had told his parents he would go to ucla. He announced for USC surprising everyone including his parents and the USC coaches (per lvloanpro). I think the story coming out later about him really wanting to go to ucla was a cover up to take some pressure off of the parents/dad.

This is how I remember it as well. After reading about it on the Bruin board I was totally confused and had to go back to look at the video that night on Signing Day evening. The mom looked confused, Dad looked genuinely pissed, and I thought his little brother was going to cry. It didn't scream to me a family that loved USC after their son had just picked USC. Quite the opposite. He also seemed to have a good time with some of the USC commits, Martin for example.
If UCLA was the school he wished to go to I'm happy for him. If not, well, he'll still get a very good education there and made his parents happy. Regardless, it looked like a very odd situation.
