  • Loel was a true pioneer in football recruiting but it was his remarkable insight into USC football that I became aware of when he posted on this board. He really had a sixth sense for the people that surrounded Trojan football. Thanks for reminding us of his genius and also of what a great guy he was.

  • Thanks for re-sharing, as I must have missed the article when it originally posted. Your father had great insight into the program, and I'm glad that I was able to read many of his stories about SC's glorious past, present and future. Fight On!

  • I remember being excited when I heard about the LK hire. So many people were down on him after getting fired in Oakland (gee, how many coaches can put that on their resume over the past decade?) and his bluster at Tennessee.

But, I saw a guy that would continue the dynasty that PC started and maybe take it to higher levels. Once Kiff and Sark and EO left, the recruiting went downhill. With Kiff (and hopefully EO) hanging around for a while, the coffers should be stocked for a long ride.

Great article by your dad, Scott! Can't wait to see if 2012 = 1962...

I was one of those people. I am glad I was wrong about him.

  • Loel Schrader, as always, hit the nail right square on the head. I was 18 in 1966 when Loel first came to the Long Beach Independent Press Telegram. I worked for them too, as a boy, delivering papers. I also mowed Dave Levy's lawn in Long Beach and had just started attending LBCC.

Loel was a lot like John McKay in that he had new ideas for his profession and a great work ethic. Nobody knew HS and college sports better than Loel.

Scott, you are the apple that didn't fall far from the tree. You and your dad have more inside info on Southern California sports than anyone I've ever read.

Your dad was a sage and a prophet. He knew how to gather facts and draw wisdom from them. He could write in a way that it was easy for the reader to understand. If we could read his practice reports right now of this spring, it would be like scripture.

Thanks for the article. Your dad was the Robin Hood of reporters.

    He never missed.

That is very nice of you to write what you did, Paul. We love and cherish your friendship, guidance and appreciation of your opinion about my dad. I can't tell you how much that means to me and it was great seeing you today!! Scott
