Kiffin vs Carroll

  • Carroll is still a living legend in my book (and the run he led may never be duplicated), but I think his success stemmed from his original staff (CEO, Chow Kiff, Sark, Dewayne Walker, Tim Davis etc). Once attrition hit the staff, he never adequately replaced them, and that coupled with some bad luck led to our decay.

It's funny that Ty Issac is mentioning Baxter (ST Coach) as his main contact and a big reason why he choose SC. The fact Baxter has implemented that Academic program is huge. CEO and Tee Martin are doing work down South, and I would dare to say to one is out-working this staff.

Thinking back to Spaulding Jr (ST Coach and recruiting coordinator) and his college buddy Yogi (Qb coach), as much as I love Carroll, I would take this staff as a whole everyday versus PC's last staff.

I'm thankful CLK was here to see CPC build it, and now he is recreating the empire.

  • Let's wait and see what Kiffin does over a 7 year stretch before we knock Pete's statue down. I like Lane too, but for right now, all he has is potential. Pete has already produced.

  • The coaching staff in 2009 was hilariously bad. I loved Pete, but his ego got in the way of putting together a decent staff towards the end

I think the commitment now to a great coaching staff is seen in the fact that Monte is making 1.5 mil

Great point. I luv Kiffi, but I'll never forget what Pete did at SC. Let's just hope Kiffi's potential translate into dominance. Last year's team and the recruit are a great start.

  • I don't like coach vs. coach comparisons. Obviously Carroll would win that comparison. What I can say is that this coaching staff is just as good as any coaching staff USC has ever had.

I also think that USC could easily go 7+ years winning 10 or more every year again. Pete Carroll is a great coach, but the University and many people on our current staff played a huge role in that run. In the 70's, USC had five 10 win seasons and a 9-2-1 season. If they played 12 games in the 30's, USC probably would have had a boatload of 10 win seasons then as well.

USC is USC. They always have more talent than the opposing team. So it is very possible that there will be a rational argument for Lane Kiffin 5 years in the future.

  • Both came in during completely different eras.
Though it was only about a decade apart, it might as well have been 75 years apart.

CPC is exactly what we needed at that time.
CLMFK is exactly what we need at this time.

  • Hopefully some of the board fatcats like Scott and Blem make a real hefty donation in order to keep Coach Baxter on board and satisfied. That guy is gold.

Agree with you. CPC never replaced good coaches with equal or better ones. I like Rocky Seto but really defensive coordinator? CEO is the best recruiter in the business and it showed when he and Lane took off to build their careers. The talent level is getting back to where it was. The current coaches don't care about stars but can spot gems. Lane was smart to pick up Tee Martin and Nebraska guy. Very hard to keep staffs together. At some point, even Monte will want to retire.
