Jason Hatcher Commits To USC

  • Scott, to my knowledge we would have to make room for Redd one of 4 ways;

    1. One of the current 2012 commits doesn't qualify academically
    2. A player loses a scholarship for medical reasons (Parsons, from a few years ago)
    3. A former walk-on loses his scholarship
    4. A current player is ineligible academically and is stripped of scholarship.

I don't think Redd could take one of the 3 unused scholarships from 2012, because that would put us over the 75 limit for this fall. Am I correct?

  • Congrats Trojans. Was hoping to keep this kid here in town.

Obviously not Scott here but to answer your question, you are talking about 2 separate things:

    1) We have to stay at 75 players or less. In order to take Redd and stay at 75 for this year one of the things that you mention has to happen because we currently have 75 players on scholarship (assuming we count DR as getting in at this point).

    2) Even though Redd is a transfer he still counts as an initial counter and has to count towards a recruiting class so he would have to take one of the 3 unused scholarships from 2012 class.

Note that if DR (or another 2012 recruit) does not qualify then it both opens up a spot for Redd in the 75 man roster and also adds another 2012 EE spot (giving us 4 unused 2012 scholarships one of which has to be used on Redd)

However if we make room on the 75 man roster for Redd in one of the other 3 ways that you mention it does not open up a new EE spot (leaving us with 3 unused 2012 scholarships one of which has to be used on Redd)

  • I think this was in response to Jason Hatcher committing to USC. A Tennessee fan tweeted this to Tee Martin and Tee Martin responded.

    Tee Martin ✌ ‏@TeeMartin17
crickets “@Herndog77: @TeeMartin17 dirty recruiting you and Kiff do it best #keepbashingthevols”

    Keith McNabb ‏@Groogrux017
@TeeMartin17 @herndog77 this guy obviously doesn't realize your VFL does he?

    Tee Martin ✌ ‏@TeeMartin17
@Groogrux017 @herndog77 not at all.. Smh..

    Spot on. All of this.

  • Trojanpride,

Thanks for the response, but as I see it, there is no way we could use one of the 3 unused spots for the 2012 class. The operative problem is the 75 scholi limit, as you pointed out. He'd be enrolled this fall semester and unless one of the 4 scenarios happened (there could be another scenario, but I can't think of it.) it won't work. Those 3 spots are for January enrollees after the current seniors have used up their eligibility at the end of the season, thus not effecting the 75 limit.

Taking one of the 3 unused 2012 scholarships without someone else losing a scholarship would put us at 76, which the ncaa-holes won't allow. Atleast that's what seems to be the case. This whole thing is pretty messed up.

No matter what, if Redd comes to SC he will take a 2012 scholarship.

There are three available (four if a current 2012 commit doesn't qualify).

On top of that, SC has to get to 75, which will happen in one of the ways described in the post above.

There are two parts to this- the 75 player roster limit and the 2012 scholarship slot.

You still aren't understanding. There are 2 distinct issues: 1) we are allowed to take 15 players/class; 2) we have to stay under 75 players total on scholarship.

Regarding issue 1. Redd, even though he is a transfer, HAS to count towards a recruiting class. So he will HAVE to count against the 2012 class. For the 2012 class we only filled 12 of the 15 spots. That's why people have been talking about the ability to take 3 EE's that enroll in January. However, if Redd comes to USC he will be #13 for the 2012 class and that will leave us only 2 EE's from that class.

Regarding issue 2. We have to stay at 75 players. If Redd comes in he will be #76 (as you said) so someone on scholarship will have to go off scholarship. But that has nothing to do with Redd still counting as the 13th recruit (out of 15) for the 2012 class.

The one caveat is that if a 2012 recruit doesn't qualify then that gets us to 75 total players AND it opens up a spot from the 2012 class. So for example if Rogers doesn't qualify then we will have had only 11 recruits from the 2012 class. Redd would make #12 and we'd have 3 additional spots that can enroll in January.

  • IMO, some people are worrying about this way too much.

Do you think for 1-microsecond this staff doesn't know exactly what it's doing here?

Why are you wasting all these gray cells?

In the end, it's not important to know the "how" or "why", just that it will "be".
