I was at UCLA's spring game: Some good performances

  • I went to the UCLA spring game yesterday while my wife went shopping.

A good friend invited me. A crowd of 13,000 showed up including last year's head coach Rick Neuheisal. All of them were treated to some spectacular performances by the UCLA QBs, WRs and a RS freshman RB who is the real thing. His name is Steven Manfro. Manfro did all kinds of spectacular things at Valencia HS but didn't get the attention he deserves. He did everything at the scrimmage including running a KO back for a TD.

How any player with Manfro'sskills could have been overlooked I don't know. He is fast, 5'10" and 190 lbs.

UCLA's QBs threw the ball with uncanny accuracy. I've been to a lot of spring games in 60 years of following CFB, and I don't remember a game with so many long passes so perfectly thrown. It looked like a repeat of the longs bombs at the USC/UCLA game last year. But this was more of a case of perfect throws and great catches than poor coverage. UCLA caught everything that was thrown.

QB Brett Hundley, out of Chandler, AZ looked like a perfect match for OC Noel Mazzone's offense. He's a genuine dual threat. QB Richard Brehaut was also impressive. UCLA looked thin on the OL. Bruin OL Sua-Filo is back from his Mormon mission. He did play but but only in spots. Both centers had a tough time snapping the ball. UCLA has had to move a guard back to center, but it didn't seem to help much Saturday.

UCLA's secondary had 6 pics but most came against backups and walkons. Rick Neuheisal's son Jerry played well at QB. He didn't come in until the 4th quarter but threw a beautiful out pattern for a TD.

DC Lou Spanos showed a lot of enthusiasm on the sideline. But the Bruin defense was not impressive except for the play of DE Datone Jones and S Tevon McDonald. The Bruin LBs were over pursuing throughout the scrimmage.

QB Brett Hundley and RB Steven Manfro are very talented and fit well into Mazone's system of short passed which ASU used to tear USC's defense apart with last year. It's just a spring game but Hundley and Manfro could have very good careers ahead of them. Hundley can run and pass and showed a lot of poise. I know you may not believe what I've shared about Manfro, but I've underplayed how good he was yesterday.

The crowd was enthusiastic. The Bruin fans are not believers yet but there is a lot of hope in Westwood.

  • While part of me wishes the bRUINS to fail miserably forever, I'm sick and tired of them embarrassing the City of Los Angeles.

It would be great if those little gutties actually ended up the #2 team in the PAC.

  • While I would love for it to have been a great performance, keep in mind that none of UCLA's starting defensive backfield played in the spring game. Almost all of those passes you saw completed, and in particular the two 60yrd bombs, were completed on Jordan Zumwalt's brothers who is a 5'8" 150lbs. 4.8 40 walk-on DB.

We can all make an educated guess as to why Manfro didn't get a whole lot of looks from D1 schools, it's the same reason Drew Wolitarsky is so under the radar. He had one of the highest SPARQ scores in the country, he is a very explosive kid and has great hands out of the backfield. All those high school americans in our backfield(Jordan James, Malcolm Jones) and Manfro is better than them all.

There couldn't possibly have been that many positive things occurring at a ucla practice that you wrote about. Are you sure you were in Westwood and not somewhere else???

It doesn't make one bit of difference where UCLA is ranked...2nd in the PAC, or 12th. Where Westwood is, or aspires to be, has zero to do with USC.

Let the gutties remain the ones always focusing across town...at least, if they become relevant again, they won't be such an embarrassment.

  • fr0m what i read they had a couple of walk on CB playing as well as a lot of back ups cause they had a lot of injuries on their Defense. So all this amazimg Offense they had really doesnt mean anything. but i do hope they win cause it will be sweeter when SC smashs them in the Rose Bowl !!!

  • I think shopping is what people will do in hell someday!

All I had to drink was water.

Although the Bruins don't play Oregon or Washington in 2012 they will struggle trying to stop Pac 12 offenses. But Bruin QBs made some uncanny throws none the less. Freshman QB TJ Millweard out of Texas also made some good throws and showed a strong arm. I can't remember a spring game that I've seen over the years where the QBs made so many difficult throws and the receivers caught everything.

WRs Ricky Bell, Darius Marvay and Devin Lucien all had good days.

A lot of people thought Manfro danced too much in HS and would have the same problems Baxter had at USC. They thought he would be going sideways and not straight ahead. But Mazzone did a good job getting the ball in space to Manfro. Hundley was impressive with his short passes and Manfro cut right up the field. Of course the Bruins were not playing against the Alabama defense.

UCLA defense did do a good job of stopping the short passes USC was throwing to Marcus Lee and Robert Woods all night at the coliseum.

If the UCLA spring game was a basketball game I would have to say there was some great outside shooting going on. I'm not just describing lay ups against a lousy defense. There were simply some beautiful passes thrown and caught.

You know how I feel about the Bruins. "If you can't say anything bad, don't say anything at all,"

I wanted to take a look at their offense and defense under Mora and the new coordinators. It's going to be an interesting year in the Pac 12 with all the new coaches and the kinds of offenses USC is going to face.

UCLA also ran their offense with a very fast tempo.

Lane and Monte Kiffin have made some wise decisions with the speed and tackling ability they have at their OLB spots. I hope the Trojans tackle this August in camp. With the type of offenses the Trojans are going to face success against them depends on making that first tackle.

I also got great chicken mole for dinner. Football and mole is better than shopping.

    Just kidding!

UCLA is running the ASU offense so at least they have a plan now. The Bruins had no starting LBs playing.

The Bruins were trying to sell tickets. There was no stop promotion going on where USC is about football. So there was lots of talk and enthusiasm about a new coach and a renewed Rose Bowl stadium. Maybe more about hype than preparation.

But Hundley and Manfro did look to be very good athletes. It's going to take a lot to get the Bruin defense ready to play but it is still spring.

I was glad to see the Rose Bowl being improved.

Well you have to consider that defense.. it gave up 50 to SC last year... and well it might just be worst now...lol... 50+ is very possible this year!

  • I have to agree with you from what I saw Saturday. But it's a spring game so you are looking more at individual performances.

Football isn't a game of individuals. It's not Sandy Koufax blowing away the last six batters of a perfect game. It takes 11 guys working together on offense. And it's the same on defense and special teams.

You don't just develop players. You develop a team. It takes a very special head coach and staff to do it well. And you have to recruit well. We will get a good idea of what's going on at UCLA after the Nebraska game. The Bruins open at Rice. Houston is their 3rd game.
