Does USC need a 2nd QB in this class?

  • borlots said...

You make way too big of an assumption. Just because a QB doesn't win the starting spot, doesn't automatically mean he's going to want to transfer. Every interview I've heard from Scroggins is that he LOVES USC, if he has turned the corner with his academics, then there's no issue with him. As for Wittek & Kessler, the final decision will not be made on the starter until sometime in fall camp of 2013. Browne as an EE will have sometime working in the system by then. Certainly there is a chance that the your scenario could play out, but chances are more likely that Scroggins, Kessler & Wittek will finish the 2013 season as Trojans. Besides, USC taking a 2nd QB this cycle could be just as likely to trigger a transfer by itself. It sends the message that we have no faith in our backup QB's.

I agree with DF 1982, that perhaps you my have to consider taking 2 in the 2013 class, IF someone transfers out. To gamble that someone may transfer out within the next 12 months doesn't make sense. Let's wait and see and not invent problems that aren't there. With only 15 scholarships in this class, plus the 3 for last year, we can't squander them. We currently have greater depth issues at S, CB, DT, DE, and OT.

I wasn't saying we should take two in the 2013 class, I was thinking 2014. Taking 2 qb's this class is higher risk because we would be assuming one of our freshman qb's trasfers as a junior, which isn't a guarantee.

Kiffin can't implement packages to get him on the field? I think the Jets having Tebow packages to compliment Sanchez is a brilliant idea.

If we are going to go a wildcat route, I would prefer more speed in that role. I would hold off on calling the Jets plan brilliant until it actually works. Even when Tebow was at UF, they used Percey Harvin in their wildcat role.

    Worst Case Scenario

    2013
    Kessler/Wittek
    Browne

    2014
Kessler OR Wittek (one is gone)
    Browne
    Unnamed QB

    2015
Kessler OR Wittek (one is gone)
    Browne
    RS Frosh
    Sills

This way we never dip below 3 QB's.

If the loser of the Wittek/Kessler battle transfers before the opener we would be down to two for the '13 season. If Browne beats out the two, both might transfer.

You trade speed for an advanced passing threat.

Plus, you keep Stanton off of the roster for a team like say, Oregon, where he could do some serious damage.

not in a position of luxury where we can use a scholly just to keep another team from getting that player. Mariotta gonna be the man at Oregon for a while anyway.

I agree I think 2013 USC will have three quarterbacks the winner of Cody Kessler/Max Wittex, the back up will be the other of Cody Kessler/Max Wittex, and Max Browne will redshirt

In 2014 I think the back up between Cody Kssler/Max Wittex will transfer so USC will have Cody Kssler/ Max Wittex, Max Browne, and 2014 quarterback recruit.

Seems like there is a high probability that USC could have just 2 QBs on the roster for 2013. I can't see the loser of the Wittek / Kessler battle waiting around and Scroggins has academic issues and likely transfer.

Given the limited scholarships, I think USC needs to target a 2nd QB that can be moved to another position after a season as emergency depth.

Johnny Stanton would be a perfect player for the staff to offer.

Yes! Even SS said in another post a little while back that Stanton would be a perfect 2nd QB and the one he would offer.

I like the fact that Stanton is a) local and b) from a great local program and c) CAN RUN. Wow! SC needs a QB who can run and I think they know that, hence the reason they were putting all hands on deck to reel in Cyler Miles.
