    Not at 240lbs he won't.

You're free to look up the exception to the rule as you choose - but I'm all for going with the odds - especially with limited scholarships on the roster. I had the same negative evaluation of Dillon Baxter based on his (lack of) size and speed. For a while, I thought I was going to have to eat crow after a few of his practice highlights, but in the end he never had enough to be a speed back or a power back and ultimately his character issues finished him off. I made some very positive comments about Prevot, but his size is a legitimate concern and it was exposed as a serious issue against top talents in the camps. Obviously the coaches see something - but right now I'm hoping he actually grows enough to become an OLB. Guys like Hutchings, who have 15lbs on prevot, are considered smallish for the the OLB position. Can he put on 50lbs? Sure. But he doesn't look like he has the frame to do it to my eye. Ergo, I think he's going to play a unique role for the team. Someone else pointed out that he'd be a great asset for when we play Oregon or other spread teams. I think that makes a lot of sense and we'll see him in the hybrid role I, and others, have been talking about.

We're going to have to agree to disagree, phear. You give Prevot a redshirt year, I could see him getting to around 230-235 pounds, and with his speed, athleticism, and Ed O's teachings, could be an absolute problem rushing the passer.

Sidenote: The link is Mingo's projected draft stock. High first rounder.

Barkevious Mingo says hi. He came to LSU a 205 pound OLB and will leave there a 240 pound top 10 draft pick WDE.

That's exactly who I was going to compare Prevot to. Although, imo, I dont think he's a top 10 pick.

Von Miller as well, except Miller is exceptionally fast.

Except Von Miller plays OLB as will Mingo at the next level

From the link: "Right now, Mingo would be best as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. That would allow him to play in space and use his athleticism to rush the passer. He would be aided by the five-technique defensive end occupying the offensive tackle as well. "

Which supports what phear is saying.

Well Prevot could play stand up rush end for USC as well, like Miller did at A&m, and what Mingo is doing at lsu. I'm not projecting his best nfl position, but the spot where he could be successful at USC. I wasn't injecting myself into their disagreement, just agreeing with the Mingo comparison while adding Miller.

  • Wait...What!?!?!?! What a surprise! SS, before he committed, did you see this coming? Total surprise to me. 18 is our max...I don't see how we can bring in another DB and will be a squeeze to get Redd. I keep reading were bringing in another DB for this class...how??

    This.
Oregon, Richrod and that spread, Mike Leach and that air raid attack, Prevot would be a great defensive athlete against those type of schemes. I agree with all of your assessment about dude, but at the end of the day, Texas and Alabama offered him and Monte, Lane, and Ed O wants him. So I will just trust in their skills and instinct and believe Prevot will be a baller for us.

  • I think the key thing to note is that Prevot is the type of athlete who can succeed at either spot.

Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks he'll be more a Clay Matthews redux than a Kiki Mingo but I don't think - and Rich, feel free to drop some knowledge here - the elephant is as prevalent in our system as it used to be on account of the changes to the SAM backer spot essentially making our system a 4-2-5.

I'll be da 1st to say it greatest def. Class ever recruited!

Yup. This class has gotta be one of the best ever on paper ... and while we probably are, we still may not be done.

It's a long, long way to NSD.

  • Great get, and I'm really happy for him! He's a great player.
    But...

Did the coaches really want 3 DE's and no more DB's? I would have thought that after Hatcher committed, they would have told him that it was too late. From the article it sounds like his commitment caught the coaches by surprise; I wonder if they had been communicating with him, or if he just all the sudden called and said 'I'm committing'.

For the DB who was supposed to commit in early August, I wonder if he was a silent and the coaches already had said that it would be fine to commit then. If so I really feel sorry for whoever that is.

Perhaps the coaches feel happy with this DB class and opened it up to all the remaining recruits and said whoever commits first gets the last spot.

As other's have said, something's gotta give at the DE position

I said the same thing in another thread. Need lots of depth on the DL and guys who can get after the QB.

You are absolutely right. The shift in offensive philosophy across the college football landscape (especially West of the Mississippi) has put teams in an almost de facto "nickel" a majority of the time. If not in actuality, then by turning the SAM into a converted-safety type, a la Dion Bailey. (This is one of the reasons I am a big fan of bringing in five DB's this go-round and not just four.)

I would say Prevot has "pass rush situation" written all over him right now, much like Malik Jackson did coming out of HS, except that I believe you can move Prevot all over the place-- stack him up next to Hatcher or Fitts, stand him up from an ILB spot and shoot him up the middle, all sorts of options with an athlete such as this.
