You are going to one of the best if not the best engineeing college in the country. I know from experience, I did my undergrad and grad work in engineering at USC and I ended up owning my own engineering and manufacturing company down the line. Look to see if the classes at night are still available. Some of the proffs at night are in industry and are trying to give back a little and will teach the theoretical very well and then teach you how it is really done in the real world. Some of the guys that I had at night put me a decade ahead of my comtempories in the areas that I was interested in, namely fluid mecanics, thermodynamics and solid mechanics.
On this note...look to see if Wes Wang is teaching digital controls in Spring. He basically wrote the Comm toolbox for MATLAB and is currently a tech fellow at Boeing. Also, Udwadia is full-time prof, but the method he developed for solving dynamical constraint problems is cutting edge (although, his book is so well written you don't even need to spend the time/money on actually taking the class, 524 I think).
Analytical Dynamics: A New Approach [Firdaus E. Udwadia, Robert E. Kalaba] on Amazon.com. *FREE* super saver shipping on qualifying offers. This book offers a fresh, readable approach to the analysis of mechanical systems. It is written as an introduction to analytical dynamics
