The victory that USC got on the road against was huge and they should thoroughly be congratulated. If I had to guess, I would say that Haden is taking a hard look at Coach Cantu. The only bad game that Cantu coached was the road game against Arizona. Other than that game, USC has played much better. I would think that if USC wins most of their games from here on out, that he should strongly be considered for the head coaching job. He has been at USC for a long time. I will reserve final judgement until the season is done.
I think USC needs to make a fundamental decision about what kind of a basketball program they want to be: a middle of the pack PAC-12 program continuing our performance of the last few decades...or...an elite national power program with goals along the same lines as its football program.
Make that decision and then staff up and recruit as appropriate. I personally hope Haden & company will pick the elite route and get the donors in line to fill the positions and fill Galen.
I also hope that they'll make a similar decision on baseball and revive USC's proud baseball tradition which has been so Sadly neglected.
Cantu's doing a nice job with the guys but I just don't see Galen filling the stands with Cantu on the floor. He certainly would be a great Cinderella story but IMO he should be a head coach somewhere before getting the keys to the Ferrari.
Moving him into the HC role would smack of the baseball program getting Cruz. Both great guys but not possessing the cache needed to compete in the upper echelon.
As mentioned above, we'll likely get an idea of where Haden wants to take SC sports with this hire.
As I said in another thread, Cantu seems like a great guy. I just think we need an elite coach (if we can get one). We could save ourselves a lot of trouble by winning the rest of our games, and storming through both tournaments. Then we'd clearly have an elite coach in Cantu, and a very good reason to keep him. :P
USC 2013-2014 All Sports Head-to-Head Record: 257-112-2 (0.695)
My USC Football Attendance Streak (Home and Away): 48
I respect the job Cantu is doing by filling in, but he is clearly not what SC needs. Yes, we beat ucla, but honestly we played terrible defense in that game and we run almost no offensive. The offense has reverted to isolation, then drive to the basket or shoot a bailout 3 at the end of the shot clock. We do almost nothing through the post.
Ucla very easily could (should?) have won that game even though we were up by 20(!).
I think Cantu deserves a head coaching spot and he should get one, but imo we need something more at SC
Fight On! Leave No Doubt.
I honestly think he's done about as good of a job as he can with where we are and what he has to work with.
Cry Havoc; and let slip the dogs of war!
