What's wrong with Tubby? Retread? Too old?
Tubby rode Pitino's coattails at Kentucky and now at Minnesota hasn't done anything there. More of O'Neill-type basketball IMO...and he's 61.
Not that there's anything "wrong" with either, but yes to both.
In my opinon, he's not the coach/direction to puruse if USC is to become a perennial winner, and nationally-respected program long term. Is he a good coach? Of course. Is he the right coach for the Trojans at this time? No.
I hate to even think about it, but I remember the last time SC got a coach from PITT!
That being said, I'm sure it couldn't happen again!
FIGHT ON! FOREVER!
Dixon and his team look like sh*t in the first half against Wichita State.
So far today, Dixon is doing a terrible job (not) coaching.
Pitt were in double bonus with 6+ minutes left and inexplicably stopped attacking the basket. Horrible coaching. Instead they ran the same predictable high screens that got them nowhere but 8 first have turnovers.
They are 0-7 from 3 and didn't score in the last three and a half minutes of the half. Wichita St, btw, are not good.
Pitt are on pace to bow out of the tourney to a higher seeded team for prob the 4th time in a row.
Someone please explain to me why we would want this guy? Give me Tim Floyd every day over Dixon.
You're looking at one game? Do you know how many single games I could bring up under Floyd that were absolutely horrible? People seem to forget we went 9-9 in conference (the same as this year) in Floyd's last year with DeRozan and Taj Gibson. It was a tougher conference then, but still.
Every basketball coach in human history has had their team go out and play like complete dogshit.
I've watched Dixon for years, I'm using today to highlight their overall performance.
They underperform in the tournament every year. No real offense whatsoever. Nothing about Jamie Dixon says lets give this guy a 10 year $25 mil offer. Sure, two years ago they were a one seed. They lost in the second round of the tournament.
Floyd certainly won't cost that much,
But seriously, I'd love to hear why people are so high on Dixon. Don't get it at all
I'm going to chalk this up one as Dixon's mind already being in Los Angeles. .
Floyd was a solid get once upon a time but that ship has sailed now. Plus he is 61 and time/ longevity isn't exactly on his side.
Personally, I find Dixon's teams a bit boring, but, you can't knock his success:
At Pitt (with zero first-round picks):
7 consecutive Big Dance appearances.
Fastest coach to get to 200 wins.
4 Big East Championship appearances.
Sweet 16, elite 8.
National Coach Of The Year
The list goes on...

That was a pathetic performance by Pitt. The Pitt board is killing Dixon.
Sure, but most of those accomplishments happened 3+ years ago.
The past few years have been a different story. They haven't made a deep tourney run, despite favorable seeding, in awhile.
The trend leads me to believe that his best coaching days are behind him
I think there at least 3 coaches that USC might have a chance landing (not including Smart) that I'd take over Dixon.
But, if we can land Dixon we'd be crazy not to do whatever we can to get him here.
Are you referring to the year USC won the PAC tournament and went into the second round before losing to runner-up MSU?
Floyd's 59...Dixon's 47.
Dixon is head and shoulders above what we've had in a while. Still, I would be open to other talented options if they are available. Shaka has always been my number 1 choice. $35 mil for 10 years would be my offer. Spend some of that Pac 12 network money on a great hire for basketball and baseball!
Dixon is the nicer version of KO.At least the blue hair alums will get a good sleep at the Galen Center.I pray to God we don't land this guy.
The next step for USC is to become a perrenial tournament team seeded #8 or higher. If we can do that with Dixon for 5 or 6 years with some decent tourny success then that's a HUGE improvement. We can make another change from there if needed.
Cry Havoc; and let slip the dogs of war!
One of the companies that I work with is based out of Minnesota. By default, there are a lot of Gopher faithfuls in the office.
They're not exactly too excited about Tubby Smith and would actually be glad if another school took him off their plate.
We may not have many better realistic options. It's just like recruiting - the guy we like doesn't always like us back.
Nice to see you posting Mike. Always good to hear your thoughts on the recruiting process, both players and coaches.
I tend to agree with you there.
If prefer Floyd or Alford over Dixon. The lobos are gonna go far in this years tourney.
I'm concerned that he's never been able to produce a 1st round pick...
Alford just got extended through 2023.
I would love him though. Think he's on par with Shaka or Brad Stevens, and up until yesterday was more realistic
I remember it more as the year we HAD to win the PAC tournament to even make the NCAAs with two first-round picks in the starting lineup. Didn't even have a winning record in conference and people talk about Floyd like they're waiting for Jesus to come back... I went to just about every game that season and I just don't get it.
