Improving the tackling would be a place to start IMO.
Improving the DL play against the option would also help.
Consistent teamwork among the secondary would be good.
Does that require a new DC?
On that I am not sure.
I still see no name to replace Monte that seems viable to happen or convinces me things get better.
True story, I was there...
WORLD FAMOUS 55 CREW
Marvin sanders would do.
OK ... that is in the ballpark ..
So, we fire a legend and hire Marvin who I do think has potential .... but is unproven.
Although I guess the fire Monte mob could say Monte has not proven himself against the Zona and Oregon option Os.
I hope we get an Oregon rematch and this USC defense shows up in a big way which I think it could.
We will see ... ahh the drama of USC football ...
Sanders is the top db coach in cfb.
I would agree but the critics could say his DBs have not consistently demonstrated a level of performance that would warrant such an accolade for Marvin.
Personally, I like the guy and I do believe he has the potential to be a good DC ... but first get the USC DBs playing together.
Our CBs were destroyed by Oregon's small WRs in the run game. I don't think they were able to shed one block all night.
TroyBill was commenting on the same thing.
Count me as a critic. Our DBs are absolutely horrible...theyre lost in coverage, get beat regularly, havent figured out how to turn and look for the ball, take terrible pursuit angles, and cant tackle for shyt.
Im thinking at least one of those is on the coaching.
Yet he cant convert a CB into a better CB re: Torin Harris
I couldn't agree more. I just got back from the game and the scheme is fine as the players were in position to make the plays. Unfortunately, we were unable to tackle anyone when we were in position. I don't think this falls on Monte but more the position coaches who don't teach correct technique and Lane who won't let them tackle in practice to get them better.
The never ending cycle of the players coming in are better than those departing.
If the current group coming in underachieves, the same thing will be said for the next class.
When other teams can take lower ranked players and perform better on the field, it is all about coaching.
Sanders has been great everywhere he has been. I think our talent is not on par with our expectations.
The new guys are always going to be great. No one ever remembers the #1 ranked players who turn out to have horrible work ethic and never live up to their potential, the 5 stars who never start more than a handful of games, the 5 stars who end up transferring and never contributing, the 4 stars who never break the stating lineup and become special teams guys, etc, etc. So many will sit here and think Cravens, Redfield, (insert or 5 star player here). etc. are going to change everything but you just have to wait and see.
No doubt it isnt but those are coaching issues not athletic issues (except for getting beat regularly).
Who would be worse?
Potholes for us, Pensions for them
The guy was turning converted WRs and RBs into first round picks at DB.
Uh, I don't know about that. Sure, our D missed a LOT of tackles, but Oregon's D did too. How many times did Silas get extra yards? And the WR's were running free in the 2ndary. Those 2 redzone TO's were the difference in the game. Neither D really did crap the whole game.
Maybe I'm wrong about this but since Monte's age is no secret, I kinda assumed that Lane figured Orgeron would take over at DC when his dad stepped down/retired or whatever. TECHNICALLY Orgeron has the title of Defensive Coordinator. On the flip side, Kennedy Pola has the title of Offensive Coordinator so maybe it's not saying much. All conjecture but i would wager Orgeron wouldn't be happy of we got rid of Monte and brought in someone else when he already has the title. Wouldn't Orgeron be a good option? I thought he played a big part in those monster Ds we had in the Pete Carroll era.
I only point to future recruiting classes, because CPC did such a terrible job in keeping the cupboards full his past couple years. The kids CLK is bringing ARE better than what was here. Just look at how some of his recruits have supplanted more senior players....
But, to defend Coach Sanders, he's not working with much. Let's see next year when we have Hawkins, Ramsey and a Sophomore Kevon Seymour at CB and Cravens, Redfield and Shaw at S.
Someone with a solid resume that indicates success at stopping the spread.
Someone whose philosophy is to bend and break the hell out of the opponent, with a solid scheme to go with it. This would, of course, be the OPPOSITE of Monte’s philosophy of a “bend don’t break” panty dance and a shady scheme that accompanies that.
Someone who can give the defense an identity and use the elite players we have (save for Porn Harris et al at that corner position) to do some damage.
Someone who can adjust during a game if the opposing team has scored on EVERY possession thus far.
Someone who can get our guys to tackle (if you remember last year when we beat Oregon, our kids actually made all open field tackles. If you remember tonight’s game, over 20 missed tackles were recorded, and those misses were where Barner and such were in our freaking grasp).
Someone who can use common sense and realize that on a zone read with a running QB like Oregon requires a spotter on that QB at all times so that if he is stupid enough to keep the ball, he pays the price.
Someone who teaches kids that if they are going to try to run over you like Oregon, with little undersized guys, then STRIP the freaking ball and punch at it at the very least while he’s running by you. Seriously, when you look at most fumbles, you’d be surprised how it’s a seemingly insignificant hit on the ball that sets it free. It’s technique. It needs to be taught and they need to spend time practicing it a bit more. Even five dedicated minutes more at practice with the right drills and techniques would work wonders. It has to be part of their muscle memory practically.
You can fill in the rest. My blood’s cooking. I’ve been tired of watching this defense since Hawaii 2010, Monte’s first game back with USC. I love Monte’s recruiting magic and what he iconically brings to the table that helps us land recruits, but I hate what our elite athletes are doing on the field on D after he gets them to USC.
Every defensive coordinator they have played should step down then, because NO ONE has cone close to stopping them
Get back to me when someone does
Which makes it all the more frustrating...If we could have tackled just a little bit and reduced their yards after contact this "might" have been a different outcome.
Blem, I always look forward to your posts and a sense of reasoning. I'll post Jay Hart's article here again. Could always take Nickie Saban's coward way out and ban the type of offense Oregon runs.
Gotta have this match-up...
From Yahoo! Sports Canada: Oregon's highlight-reel offense has fans craving a matchup against the stalwart 'Bama 'D'.
