The recovery time for a torn Achilles is one year.

Kobe is obviously different than but Billups but it took Billups a year to get back from his torn Achilles and he's still not right.

Not to get too gruesome but players know when the Achilles goes. It recoils. There's no mistaking it and quick to diagnose.

Ric Bucher @RicBucher
This isn't the way you'd ever want to see Kobe Bryant go down, but it probably is the only way he ever could. Any-
thing short of being maimed and he would've found a way to get back on the court. The idea that, if he did indeed suffer a torn Achilles tendon, this was his last game, or last game as a Laker, though, is both sensationalistic and a notion that doesn't fit with everything we know about Kobe Bryant. Yes, his current contract only runs through next season and a torn Achilles can take a full year to heal. But I can't imagine him ever wanting to go out this way and it's even less imaginable to think he'd go some place else or the Lakers would let him. All that said, a page officially turns. No one, not even Kobe Bryant, comes back from a torn Achilles tendon remotely the same. 1

Did the decision by Kobe and Mike D'Antoni not to rest contribute to this severe injury? D'Antoni said: "I will ...
second-guess it and look at it, but he is an incredible competitor and it happened -- and we will go forward."
About all the playing time recently being an issues to debate, D'Antoni said: "It is like putting my head against a wall, and he just wouldn't budge on it. And there is a part of me that didn't want him to budge, because he's incredible. It is one of those things."

"If this was a prize fight they'd call it off"- F ND!
he'll be back. hard to compare other players who've had the same injury since kobe is a different breed. he won't ever have the burst again, but I think if anyone can come back from this 100% or close to it, it's the black mamba.
Well, I guess the idiot Mike 'Antonie has no other option but to rest him now. I was ready to give him a chance with an off season of his own but now I really hate him. The last few weeks sealed the deal playing KB 48 mins a game. Stupidity.
agreed. no matter how much the team needed Kobe, there was no way Phil Jackson would have done this, given the same situation.
First off, I LOVE, KB. But....if he knows he's done, do the Lakers use the amnesty on him and save that big $$$ number?
I never want to see this happen to anyone, even as a Clippers fan.
To all of the people bashing his recent minutes: Don't you think he wanted/demanded to be out there? Without him going as hard as he has, there's no way the Lakers are even in the playoff picture right now.
Blaming this on D'Antoni is some BS. He may not be the right coach for that team(he's not the right guy), but this cannot be blamed solely on him too. People trying to blame him are just piling on and taking the easy blame option here. Kobe has as much to do with his own recent minute count, as anyone.
He'll be back. Gives him a year to rest his entire body. He'll come back strong as always, that's just his MO.
He's the coach man. He gets paid to manage the team. He took a horse and rode it until it died on him. It's too bad Mike Antonie didn't step in like he should have, he might have earned the respect from Kobe as well as the rest of the team. Instead he let Kobe run off like a teenage girl with her dads credit card. Any coach with a brain knows Kobe aint taking himself out.
He should have sat him down after the first knee insident happened under the basket... any idiot could have recognized Kobe legs were dead and had no business out there pushing it like he was.
He will be back. I have had both of them tear and you are never the same. He will evolve mj did when he got old. His leg will be imobalized for 3-4 months you get strength back but never the same explosion.

You think he could have kept Kobe out with their season on the line?? Come on they needed every min out of him. He manned up curry in crunch time took him out of the end of the game. Injuries happen very often look at the Football team.
Yes, it's called coaching. If you're afraid of your players then you shouldn't be there.
Am I wrong but didn't the Lakers still manage to win a really close game with 3 minutes left with out Kobe? Just sayn. They didn't need him for every minute.
Kobe Bryant will be back, but the question is will he be back with the Lakers?
On ESPN, Stephen A. Smith was saying Jim Buss may use the amnesty clause on Kobe Bryant to save money since he may not play next season. As mentioned by Smith it would be a public relations nightmare. Even if Kobe could return for some games next season he would not be able to sign with the Lakers.
Also, even if the Lakers keep Kobe is after next season will they resign. The team may want to do something else since LeBron James will be a free agent.
We know Kobe Bryant will return, but will the Lakers want him. Furthermore will Dwight Howard resign with the Lakers and will they trade Pau Gasol. Before he got hurt last game, Kobe, Pau, and Dwight were playing well together.
The sad thing is this team was never healthy together. Almost every player was injured this season (Kobe, Pau, Dwight, Nash, Blake, Hill, and World Peace). We will never know how this team could have played together.

Damn man i feel bad for @kobebryant . If there's anybody and i mean anybody who can come back from that injury it would be him! Best wishes!

From Yahoo! Sports: Kobe Bryant's season is over after he likely tore his Achilles. Will this also be the end of his career? Or the beginning of another challenge?
This post has been edited 3 times, most recently by USCTraveler80 15 months ago
We can do the hindsight thing all day but you only live the moment once and i don't think many would have sat him more than a couple mins. Again these things happen and it happens often. I agree that he played too many mins and dantoni didn't manage him well but it's still not his fault that this happened. It happens
D'Idiot strikes again.
I'm sorry Kobe got hurt, but it could be the best thing to happen to the lakers. Force them to rebuild from the ground up. It's obvious the present roster wasn't going to get it done.
Try and resign Howard. Get what you can for Pau. Maybe have to take it on the chin another year...then be as good as knew. Assuming Buss Jr. doesn't screw up the Pau trade.
Kobe will be back. Probably come back with a game still better than 80% of the players in the league will have to offer.
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
1. Waited until AM for this tweet out of respect - but a Kobe amnesty is a real possibility. Would save LA about 80m in lux tax fees.
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
2. Such a dangerous injury, even if it takes 10 mths for him to come back (ambitious at his age), that's All-Star Break next season.
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
3. And it will be Year 18 for him. So tough for old guys to come back 100 percent from major leg injuries. Look at Billups this season.
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
4. We have an NBA Countdown show on ABC at 1230pm tomorrow - this will be a lively conversation. Not sure what right Lakers answer is here.
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
5. Last thing - if LA DID amnesty Kobe, can u imagine the amnesty bidding process? What's 2-3 mths of Kobe worth for a team with cap space?
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 4h
6. LA's other option: give Pau away (trade him for young player + cap space) to save that 80 mill in lux tax money. Does DH come back then?
The Lakers won Friday night but likely lost Kobe Bryant for the rest of the season with a probable torn Achilles.
This Laker team never played together. The only issue was the lack of an athletic young point guard and some good bench players. I really thought that during the off season the team could have signed some players and traded for some other players to fix the team despite the being over the salary cap.
If the Lakers amnesty Kobe Bryant, they risk letting him go to another team. After a player is released other teams are allowed to bid on him to get him. Imagine teams below the salary cap bidding for Kobe. I think the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Bobcats, and Phoenix Suns would try to get him. I think the Lakers cannot release him, they have to keep him. Kobe Bryant would not want ot play for a bad team next season. Also, the bigger issue is will the Lakers resign Kobe Bryant after his contract expires. This team is in trouble.
Bryant's injury threatens a career and the future of a franchise.
This post was edited by USCTraveler80 15 months ago
Agree with all your points. Phil would of had no problem telling Kobe to sit down. This idiot D'Antoni has been one colossal f&ck up!
Could he retire and make a "comeback" with the lakers under a new contract after sitting out a year ?
If this is truly the end, my childhood hero went out like a complete PIMP. Tore his achilles, then said "fuck it" and limped to the FT line and swished 2 shots. Definitely the last of a dying breed.
80 million bucks is a lot of money to other teams not named the lakers. The TV deal they have in place makes 80 million a drop in the bucket.
If Kobe comes back by February...he'll be ready for the playoffs. If anyone can do it...Kobe can.
There's no rule in the book that says he can't. Come back for a reasonable amount and make one last run. Good point.
Officially out 6-9 months. Ruptured achilles.
