Unfortunately we're the ones who got caught, of course.
This basically describes everything about Lane Kiffin's tenure. Any little thing that happens, regardless of whether other programs do it, is a huge, front page story.
Closing practices / not commenting on injuries = WHAT IS HE HIDING!?!?
Deflating balls = CHEATER!
I don't think he's done a great job this season, but it can't be helped by the fact that every little thing he does is analyzed under a microscope to drive page clicks.
ASU's QB Taylor Kelly had his balls deflated right in front of the entire Coliseum and caught on PAC 12 cameras. Nobody seemed to care much.
That's basically what the manager is saying here:
A: Oh, I know they are aware. We’ve discussed it. I’ve had conversations with coaches about it. Even more so after the USC incident. For such a small story, I had a lot of conversations with coaches about the USC thing. But most of it was about what nonsense the USC thing was, because it’s just so run-of-the-mill. It happens everywhere. And of course, we were kind of laughing because of the whole ‘Oh, this poor student manager was solely responsible for deflating footballs.’ Everybody kind of read that and knew it was a big joke.
Sorry, but if we had an AD with a spine this could be managed IMO.
Had Haden stepped in and said this was a non-issue and no, the equipment manager won't be fired but instead put through a rigourous program on learning the rules.
None of this would have blown up like it did.
Spineless isn't helping anybody.
I actually agree with this. I think firing the manager made the whole thing worse because it made it seem like USC was making him a scapegoat and you don't need a scapegoat if you didn't do something wrong.
Had USC treated it less seriously, others might have treated it less seriously.
Or..it could mean that USC will not stand for even a hint of something improper. No matter what we think Pat should or shouldn't do...he is widely respected.

I would have to say that the whole respect thing is a two sided coin with Pat.
