We should have taken the Oklahoma schools and called Texas' bluff. I believe taking the Oklahoma schools would have been the downfall of the Big 12, and it would only take a couple of years and Texas would be asking us to let them join.
Exactly. The Longhorns Network is not as awesome as they thought it would be. It folds perfectly into the TV deal. It's basically a perfect setup. If Texas comes, Oklahoma comes, if Oklahoma comes, Okie St. comes, then we look into Texas for a 16th team (TTU, TCU, idk)
They also fit the PACs philosophy of strong academics and championships across all types of sports. I think it's just a matter of time at this point.
Adding the mid-south market would be huge for TV money, and just more fun for recruiting.
I still think there should 4 AQ super conferences of 16 teams, everyone else is non-AQ, much easier to setup for a 4, 6, or 8 team playoff in the future.
That was for the first go around. Last year after A&M left, OU came back to the PAC12 and the PAC12 said thanks, no thanks.
Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken
I think that was the orginial plan
No matter how many teams we ultimately end up getting, I wish we had kept the name "Pac-10". The Big 10 kept their original name despite having 11 then 12 teams because they knew it had a better ring to it...in addition to the fact that the name "Big 12" was already taken.
I think that has more to do with there being (and having been) lots of Bigs. So changing the number loses identity. But Pac-8, Pac-10, Pac-12, Pac-14, Pac-16, Pac-32, Pac-64, Pac-128, Pac-256 are all going to be known to be the same, expanding conference.
USC 2013-2014 All Sports Head-to-Head Record: 257-112-2 (0.695)
My USC Football Attendance Streak (Home and Away): 48
Whatever happens needs to happen quickly. If the BIG-XII aligns with some Big East and/or ACC schools, it is the PAC-12 that gets left in the dust. PAC-12 will get stuck with former WAC/MWC schools to expand, which arguably doesn't even help the conference.
people are not considering the longhorn network and the hundred of millions that is worth. Any discussion of Texas must include an incorporation of that LHN to the pac 12 network somehow. That is what stalled talks last time.
As for OSU and OU, looks great on paper, but the money aint there. Oklahoma is a shit market, nothing to be gained except for having the name Oklahoma with the Pac. But the market is too small, not enuff of a footprint for us. Utah bringing in Salt Lake was more attractive. (Rutgers and Maryland arent anything in terms of teams, but they bring in New Jersey (and good chunk of NYC), and the Washington DC area, great footprints. The only move for us now is to pull texas, and get to 16.
Its all on Texas. And bc of that, its all about the LHN. We make some headway with that issue, we can pull texas. If tex, comes, the little sisters TTech, and cousins OSU Oklahoma will automatically follow. We get texas, then its a wrap: Seattle down to Cali, all the way over to Texas. We would easily compete with the SEC in terms of competitiveness, and our market would be sooo much more.
Why not TCU/SMU instead of Texas Tech? Surely the Dallas market is better than the Lubbock market?
