Thank you, Spirit.
What are the chances we can retain him as an assistant? He could make two to three times the mone with us than he could make at Cal State Whatever. Was that mean to say?
Retaining him as an assistant is a slap in the face. If he isn't a big enough name to get the HC gig here he deserves one at a solid mid major at the very least.
He's doing a bang up job getting this team to play hard and actually win games.
He's making it very hard for Haden to look past hiring him permanently.
CBC is doing a great job with what he has to work with but I doubt he has the resume to draw the talent needed to consistently get to the Sweet 16 or better. Unfortunately, I just don't think Haden has what it takes to go get the coach that CAN do it consistently.
If he does have what it takes to get a coach that can win in Galen Center....we haven't seen it.
Really love what coach Can-Do is doing!

Agreed, its a bit of a dilemma. We all want a big name coach but if Cantu gets us to the tournament doesn't he deserve a shot to be HC?
What are the realistic goals/expectations??
Unlikely he gets us to the tournament. Our only way to the tournament is to win the Pac 12 tournament. Possible but will be tough. Here is my feeling on this. We have waited a long time for a consistently great BB program. Given the fact that we aren't know as a Basketball power, I think it's okay to wait this out another season with Cantu to truly evaluate his potential. Would be fucked up beyond belief if we brought in a so so or short term hire and Cantu moved on somewhere else to become the next Shaka Smart.
I pretty much agree with this.
Just not seeing the Dixon's, Alford's or Few's of the world coming to 'SC without some big time support from the administration to take hoops seriously....and even then it is iffy at best.
Cantu deserves a shot, but the unknown is maybe he doesn't want us. He has seen things first hand here, maybe he wants to be a head coach at a place where its a complete fresh start.
It will be interesting, but I am not getting my hopes up at all...
Looks like the administration is going through the process and is surprised by the level of coaching looking at this position. While I like Cantu and we can do a lot worse, we need to get serious about hoops. This decision will impact every other decision that Haden makes. Does USC care about basketball? If they do not, then hiring the assistant is the way to go. Who knows, maybe we will make the tourny every other year. Yet, to hire a guy who has never won a tournament game?
USC offers three things: Great venue, very competitive salary and LA. If you win in LA, people will come. If you have the chance of getting the six big names listed on the other site, then you are foolish not to go after them. Haden has hired a search firm and they are in the process of putting together a viable list and ranking them. If Cantu ends up at the top of the list, then hire him. Yet, if Smart will come for $2.5-$3M, then you really should consider him.
The pac 12 is down this year. The bruins are unhappy with Howland. Right now is the time to move. I am certain the rest of the pac 12 would be thrilled if we hired Cantu full time. He could end up being great, yet right now, there is just too much risk.

Agreed. And I think USC has at least implied to someone that they're interested in establishing a great bball program or I doubt Galen Center would've been built.
