  • Does this include Reggie's receiving yards? That was a big part of his game, something that McNeil didn't do nearly as much. Also, where did the rest of Leinart's passing yards go? Compared to Barkley, there is about 800 yards unaccounted for, if each spread out 1000 to various others.

Even still, the playmakers in 2011 are quite impressive.

That does not include Reggie's receiving yards.

Here is how Leinart spread the ball around in 2004:

    Dwayne Jarrett 849
    Steve Smith 660
    Reggie Bush 509
    Dominique Byrd 384
    Chris McFoy 272
    Alex Holmes 244
    Jason Mitchell 226
    David Kirtman 161
    LenDale White 97

And a few piddling yards to others.

2005 was almost a miserable season for me. Riding that winning streak; being two-time National Champs, looking for 3 in a row; comparisons to the greatest teams in CFB history; and that damn NC game (I still see VY running wild over us). The expectations were championship or bust. I could not enjoy the journey, because I was so focused on the destination.

2012 is starting to feel the same way, but it is really misplaced. This team does not have the legacy that the 2003-2005 team did. Sure, we return back a Heisman-hopeful, but we're still an extremely young team not is only 2 seasons away from an 8-5 finish. The 2012 also has only played in a small handful of "big" games (vs. Stanford - a loss; @ ND - a win; @ Oregon - a win).

I sure hope this 2012 Trojan team is mentally stronger than I am. I hope they can just take one play and one game at a time and fight their way to Miami and win that damn crystal football. Until then, it is going to be a looooooong 5 months for me.

I agree. This season isn't gonna be as fun, because I know one mistake and the NC dreams could be done for the team. The 2011 team was probably the funnest team I've ever watched, because I knew they were underdogs and it was cool seeing them prove everyone wrong and at the end of the season it was a surprise. Now the only way the team can surprise is if they don't make it all the way to NC.

Lol... totally makes sense! Obviously I was cheering as loud as ever last year, but I never felt super "stressed" as there wasn't as much riding on the games as usual. Even after the Stanford game, I could appreciate what an incredible game/experience it was rather than being completely distraught for the following week. Don't get me wrong, I was pissed/depressed, but nothing like it would be if we were fighting towards a BCS birth. Intensity will surely be way up this year and like you said, "I hope the 2012 Trojan team is mentally stronger than I am!"

  • I still think there is (or should be) a little less pressure this year. There's no "three-peat" at stake. We're still under sanctions, so everyone knows that we have to be careful about injuries. We had a ton of defensive injuries on that '05 team but people from other teams/schools tended to blow that off and say, "Yeah but your 3rd string is like most team's 1st string." That might be true if most teams were starting the Ting brothers, and their 2nd string LBs were true freshman - one of whom was playing with a bum shoulder....

If we don't get to and win the BCS this season, it'll be disappointing; but I don't know that it will hurt quite as much. Maybe I just have more realistic expectations this time around, especially in light of what happened in the 2006 Rose Bowl. I'm going to try to just hope for the best and enjoy the heck out of the ride. We have a lot of great kids on this team who are going to give their all. They've come together in ways we probably thought wouldn't happen and have already faced a lot of diversity not of their making. Whatever happens, I'm proud of them.

    Fight on!

  • How do you compare a team going for 3 strait National Chapionships vs a team that finished behind a sub 500 UCLA squad in league. Why all the hype.

One point that they brought up that I found pretty amazing was the fact that the 2012 Trojans put up those numbers in one less game... IF they win the title this could go down as one of the best offense ever... and even more important.. this year's defense is much better than the 2005 team.. with a reall young defense of Rey.. Cush.. Matthews.. and company!
