Can Max Browne Leap Over Kessler/Wittek......

  • The more I read about Max Browne, the more he seems to be the complete QB including his leadership skills. While neither Kessler nor Wittek have even seen the field yet, both have some very good attributes while also having some deficiencies as well. If Browne comes in the Spring, with an entire Spring to bulk up and learn the playbook, could we see another true freshman starter after this season? With Kessler and Wittek being so young, if either wins the job they will be at QB for 3 seasons. That's too long for Browne to be on the bench. Something's gotta give, and this kid seems to have future NFL Top 5 draft pick written all over him.

  • Matt Barkley is the lone exception in all of USC lore starting as a freshmen. As excited as I am with how well he is playing at these high school camps, Max and Cody have done nothing wrong to separate themselves. I just don't like controversy at QB. It lost LSU a National Championship.

I think you might be getting ahead of yourself. This kid is stick thin. Let him ride the bench, get in the weight room, and learn the playbook. Yes, some freshman will play, but with the depth at qb I highly doubt he will leapfrog the other three qbs

  • Speaking of which, has Scroggins resolved his academic issues? Is he eligible?

  • Injury, performance, and early draft declaration all factor in. MB Jr. will redshirt, take competitive reps and have at least two solid years to start...just like Leinart, Booty, and Sanchez before him and like Davis Sills after him. As of late and for the foreseeable future, starting at QB at USC is a guarantee that you will be drafted. It shouldn't be strange, then, that it takes a guy a couple of years to learn and earn the position. Pure physical talent is only part of the equation when talking about playing early in an extremely complex system like USC's, especially at the QB position. Leinart was probably the least physically gifted QB compared to Hance, Cassel, and even Booty when he showed up on campus.

I have total confidence in the coaches to start Browne over Wittek/Kessler if the two are unable to perform after 3 years in the system. Barkley and Palmer were anomalies and neither should have been playing as early as they did, not in USC's system at least. It seems like Wittek/Kessler are much more legitimate candidates to step up to the challenge, relative to Mustain and Corp.

He is not stick thin at 205 and still a junior in high school.

  • There's a reason that Max has a two year separation gap between him and the freshmen and why we didn't take a QB last year. It's because he's going to wait his turn just like JDB and Mark did until their junior seasons, and it bears mentioning that Mark in particular was at a very comparable talent level coming out of HS.

Next year, Max will redshirt and the year after that he'll get his feet wet as the backup (I'm going with the rather safe assumption that whoever doesn't win the Kessler/Wittek derby will transfer out by that point). If the starter goes pro early, then he's in as a RS-Soph; if not, he gets even more on the job training before he takes the reigns as a junior.

Sills will be in this exact position when he comes in two years behind Max, as will every QB SC brings in for the forseeable future because USC has become the destination school for QBs. Max is very cognizant of all of that - which is exactly why he didn't heavily consider schools who took a QB last year - and I have no doubt he'll be happy to put in the work and learn until it's his turn.

I don't think a QB controversy lost them the national title so much as having two bad QBs did roflmao.

I think they're going to be a better team this year with Mettenberger at the helm, even in spite of the losses they had last year.

  • Its possible that If he comes in and plays better than both wittek and Kessler then he can be the starter. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves, Wittek and Kessler are very good football players with much more time in the system. Give Browne a RS year, plus one more year as a freshman and we might see him pushing the seniors.

  • Stick thin? No. This guy in person looks great for a junior in high school. U ever seen max wittek? Not that big either

He looks thin to me....205 sounds decent, but not for his height.

Apparently, the QB controversy was, "Ah crap, if we have to start one of them, which one sucks less??"

  • It seemed like they just forgot to recruit at that position. Same goes for the entire SEC

But think about this... he is 6 FOOT 5.... and to be 205, that is stick thin... let him live in the gym for a year and then his RSFreshman year throw him to the fire

The key is that he weighs 205 as a JUNIOR in high school, 6'5" 220 is super solid for a QB and he should have no problem getting to around that weight by his freshman year in college... he's already got and athletic build too.

That about sums it up. Their QBs were awful even by SEC QB standards.
