  • ehhh, the way i see it, is if we get guys like this, is because we missed on the guys we really wanted. I am also concerned about getting too many out of state/out of region players. Bowden said when he started to pick up these elite out of state players, it ruined team chemistry.

  • Would agree with you most of the time, but not in this instance. Not only is a Ramsey a top 100 recruit but nearly everyone that has talked to him and knows him says he is a great, great kid. The problem with OOS kids isnt that they are from out of the state it's that typically if they are recruited to a school in a loaded region (ca or fla) it means they are really, really hyped. Too many times that equates to inflated egos tha aren't good for team chemistry. Rest assured, Ramsey would only add to team chemistry. This isn't everson griffin or Joe McKnight.

It's never really about 1 recruit. It is just as a whole, a team can kind of lose it's identity chasing stars across the country. i like pulling 3-4 elite out of region guys a year max. Less now, under sanctions. Also when it comes to declaring early for the draft, better chance of an in-state kid staying for his senior year, than an out of state one.

So does TJ Bryant, Brice Butler, Markeith Ambles. What's your point? Or did you not understand my point.

That we can pick up elite out of state players and they can be strong, vocal team leaders on predominantly California teams.

No, I got your point. I'll trust the coaches and their assessment of the kid's character.

So does Blake Ayles, James Boyd, Dillon Baxter etc... I don't think it matters if you're an in state or out of state recruit, if you're not buying in to what Lane is preaching, you will get shown the door.

What sanctions? Our 75 are better than your 85.

  • Arbitrary numbers, maybe? Why 3-4 but not 6? Also should have we gone after Troy Williams over Max Browne because he is a local kid and less likely to bolt after 3 years?

We have certainly missed on some solid local talent, particularly at the end of pete's reign when we were chasing guys like Marvin Austin and co. in other regions. It's also worth noting 7/22 of the probable starters on our squad are going to be from OOS.

Brice Butler was absolutely not a problem or anyway detriment to team chemistry. To imply otherwise is simply not accurate.

Exactly. Just get good kids wherever you can find them. Besides, California is the size of 6 other states. San Diego vs IE vs Orange County vs LA City vs Bakersfield/Fresno vs Sacramento/Stockton vs SF Bay Area, etc, etc ... not exactly a close community.

  • Bottom line is Kiffin and staff will get the best 15-17 players who fill the needed positions and who want to be Trojans! Gotta love the class they are putting together!

Agree that while under sanctions we should focus more on local players. If we don't, that leaves that many more players for our Pac12 competitors to pick up, which only adds to the benefit they are gaining because we can only take 15.

Um false... if we get a guy like Ramsey its because we recruited him hard. If the coaches weren't after him hard then he wouldn't be unofficially visiting all the way from tennessee. As far as Bowden saying oos players ruined chemistry, sounds like an excuse to me. During fsu's championship years they had as many OOS players on their roster as they did when he was forced out.

  • USC will take two cornerbacks this recruiting class. I want Priest Willis. Chris Hawkins is a great cornerback, both together will be one of the best combinations.

apparently he's spoken to Marvin Sanders just once maybe twice and the coaches didn't check him out during May evaluation...so take from that what you will.

I think the point is we haven't 'gotten' a guy, in-state or otherwise, willing to take the other corner spot in the first place. The top two other guys 'we really want' are OOS. If we whiff on 1. Willis (OOS) or 2. Hargreaves (OOS) or 3. Johnson (IS), we'll all be wishing Ramsey had signed.

In general I agree that you'd prefer an elite in-state athlete over an elite OOS because of the family proximity/homesickness element that affects some more than others. Carroll said he only liked to recruit OOS guys if it looked like they were going to be future first-rounders; I bet you that SC would sign a full OOS class if it somehow came down to it (including this year). Notre Dame essentially does it every year, so does Oregon. The coaches want the best available athletes, period. Recruiting pragmatism and the fact that California is such a talent rich state is what keeps the ratio what it is, not potential team chemistry issues.

I think Bowden was full of shit--losing is what ruins team chemistry, winning (and playing time) is what galvanizes it.
