Board Question: How many should USC sign in this class?

  • I was firmly in the sign 20 and don't go over 80 total scholarships camp incase you win the appeal and can count it as a year of sanctions, however, I have changed my mind.

The initial reason I was against signing 25 was because if USC lost the appeal, the 2012 recruiting class could be as small as 6 players.

However, if USC tried for 80 (now 79 max) and a couple more players transfers, USC could be int he same position it was in last year of being in the mid seventies, hurting next years team.

I now sign as many highly regarded players as possible - without any late reach offers. Don't aim to get 85 bodies, unless those final ones are highly regarded and save the space for the 2012 class.

    How it could breakdown:

    Current Roster: 59
    Signed 2011: 23
Transfers from now until 2012 class enroll + academic casualties: 4
    Early departures: 2
    Graduating SR: 13

    59+23-19= 63

That would leave USC with space to bring in 12 recruits . The following year has a larger graduating class and you can then use the 3 left over in the 2012 class as EEs for 2013.

  • TrojanMindSC: Good thinking. Go get 'em, and there could be a pleasant surprise among 'em. Best Loel Schrader

  • Nice breakdown Mind, thanks.

I honestly stopped trying to figure out the math a while ago haha. So many scenarios for how many they take and so many realistic options on the board...I'm just trying to do my best to kick back, see what happens, and trust the staff to do what 's best

This is definitely the best approach to maintain one's sanity in the days leading up to LOI day.

Every fan that is fresh to the game of recruiting should adhere to this sage advice!

  • I have been of the opinion for awhile that if there are 25 guys worth taking that we should take them. I think it will be much easier to manage the coming depth issues (even if we are limited to 75) from a position of strength (i.e., a full roster). Even if we only able to take 6 next year, we can mitigate some of the issues by redshirting several recruits this year such that creates a larger class for the following year. I think the primary thing is keeping the number of scholarship players to as close to the maximum as possible, which I believe is easier to do when you are starting with as close to a full roster as possible. Going with 82, 83, 84, this year allows for transfer, injuries, early departures.

  • Jedi Trojan: Yeah, go for it. There are always casualties -- academic, medical, whatever -- that will take care of any number problems. The SEC hasn't worried about numbers. Best, Loel Schrader
