A message from USC compliance...(4/12/2012)

  • Lmao what if its you're cousins uncle by adoption.lmao

  • It would be simplest to say no recruit or their family on the USC forum.
Reason given: NCAA guidelines forbid interaction between a recruit, their family & the fans on this board.

Anything short of the above will IMO lead to NCAA violations as they are written now.

I spoke to compliance this morning and parents and family members are fine being subscribers to this site and are okay to post, just nothing about their son, grandson etc. They can enjoy the fan experience, but cannot become part of the recruiting process.

Compliance admits these rules present a lot of grey areas and even conceded the NCAA may eventually do away with the rules of engagement on the internet because it's nearly impossible to monitor and know who anyone really is.

So, to all who post on this site, do not communicate in any way with a recruit or family member on this site. Not even to say thank you or ask how they are doing.....ZERO contact please.

    Thank you!

    Scott

Thanks Scott! Well, there it is and that's the bottom line. I think Scott just laid it all out there for us. If that's what compliance has said and I do believe SS in his report, let's keep that the bottom line and not cross it...its not worth putting our team/players/staff in jeaopardy of the NCAA. Some may not agree with it, some may be confused, and most of us know how unreasonable and ridiculous the NCAA can be. However, its best to not even try to cross that line. If someone identifies themself as a parent, etc, its best to no longer have contact here on the board or anywhere where it can be seen publicly. If they don't identify themself as a parent, though they maybe, then its best that they don't identify themself, but once they do, than I agree with Scott...ZERO contact.
    Respectfully and FIGHT ON!!

Can't the NCAA see that fans interacting with recruits is just part of recruiting, and his been since recruiting started. It has happened in local communities forever, and now with social media, it is happening on the online community. Both types are impossible to monitor.

I doubt there is any one single recruit that has never interacted with a fan of any of the schools recruiting him, or at least you would be extremely hard-pressed to find one. They would pretty much have to live in a hole and not have any outside contact.

I understand not allowing impermissible gifts or things along that nature, but fans trying to get a recruit to go to their school is just part of the sport.

I respectivly disagree. Fans have not been involved in the recruiting process for decades, unless of course, we are talking those certain fans that seek to intentionally interject themselves into the process.

Those overzealous or fringe element fans are typically not going to abide by the rules regardless. But they are an exceptional minority of the total fan base.

Leave the recruiting to the Coaching Staff. They know what they are doing. They don't need our help. And they certainly don't want us fans interfering with the behind-the-scenes strategy that coaching staffs employ to land certain recruits, or to manipulate and deceive others, to the advantage of their University.

The NCAA does not want the Fans involved in Recruiting.
The Coaching Staff does not want the Fans involved in Recruiting.

So, why do the fans feel so compelled to go against the grain, and defy the wishes of the very institution they claim to support?

Based on superfans question, I believe I am not the only one that is confused by the contridiction in Scott's post?

If I'm reading correctly: Its OK for family of recruits to subscribe and post... but its not OK for all who post on this site to communicate in any way with family of a recruit...

Does this mean that family of a recruit will then be posting to themselves (on an island so to speak), because no one else may address that persons post, reply to their post, post about their post, or address them directly in a post?

    Am I missing something?

    That's how it reads.

They can post but no one can respond. Strange, extreme, and, likely, not enforceable.

So when a football player does good at a high school, no one in his community who is a fan of a college tells him they should go to that college?

You're telling me that in Texas or in the South, where the fans are rabid, and college football is life, no one generally tells them where they should go?

  • To illustrate how ridiculous this all is, a few hours ago someone posted a topic about Max Browne being at USC, and said that they said hi and welcome to the Trojan family. Doing that is a recruiting violation according to this BS, and I guess that thread was deleted. So if you are a fan, alumni, or booster, making a recruit who has already committed feel welcome is against the rules. This is absolutely ridiculous, and I bet that in the recruitment of every single 4 or 5 star player EVER, that rule has always been broken.

No one said the rules make sense. However, YOU can do your part.

  • The rule, of course, is unenforceable over the Internet and has a lot of gray areas, but this is beyond the point. What is important is that USC has to do everything it can do to prevent violations and, barring that, at least have something to show the NCAA for its efforts.

If there's one thing to remember when dealing with the NCAA, it's the fact that the NCAA is very much about appearances and very little about substances. Even if there is no substance to this USC announcement it's the appearance that matters to the NCAA. Sadly, one of the few ways to beat the NCAA is to play their game.

As ridiculous and stupid as the whole Dillon Baxter story was it sends the message that USC is serious about compliance. This email from USC isn't that much different.

You can say hi to a recruit and welcome him the Trojan family. Let's not go overboard with this. The rules are clear.

Note the bylaws below. As long as you're not promoting USC's intercollegiate athletics program, you're good to go.

I had a conversation a few years back with Chris Strobel from the NCAA and he told me that there was no problem when former Penn State running back Larry Johnson had a casual conversation with Broderick Green when he was on campus... As long is it didn't pertain to attending Penn State or attempting to influence him Into attending Penn State.

So then it IS OK for fans to talk to recruits, so long as they don't mention the athletics program or assist in recruitment. But really that could be twisted any way the NCAA wants; having a conversation trying to make a recruit feel welcome could be considered assisting in recruiting since making a recruit feel welcome when they're on campus is part of what the staff wants when they're recruiting someone. Also telling someone they're part of the Trojan family could be considered recruiting because that is promoting the sense of family and unity that exists when you're part of USC or the football team.

    And what about this:
"DO NOT CONVERSE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM WITH A RECRUIT OR A RELATIVE OF THE RECRUIT."

So I guess that's not true now?

The point is, this is all so ridiculous because it happens all the time and is completely unenforceable.

    Arsenal- you nailed it.

It doesn't matter that it's unenforceable, unreasonable and makes no sense.

This is the NCAA. Have people not seen how they operate?

There are people at the NCAA who will try to prison-rape USC again if they get the chance. And if SC wins a NC this year, those people are only going to become more bitter.

    Make no mistake folks-

USC IS A THREAT TO CERTAIN PEOPLE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL WHO DO NOT WANT TO SEE WEST COAST TEAMS WIN, EVER, AS IT DESTROYS THEIR NARRATIVE OF SOUTHERN DOMINANCE IN FOOTBALL.

That is why it is important they get no ammunition whatsoever.

That means all of us doing whatever we can to help USC by NOT engaging with recruits and their families on the Internet.

SC is already on probation and got crushed with sanctions over the flimsiest case you can imagine.

Do any of you really want to help the people at the NCAA who would like to bring SC down once and for all by interacting with recruits' families on the Internet ?

    Of course it's ridiculous.

But you are missing a key point-
throughout history, until very recently, when every 4 and 5 star recruit was being welcomed onto every campus in America with these rules being violated in the process, THERE WASN'T A PERMANENT TRAIL ON THE FUCKING INTERNET THAT SHOWED ALL OF THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN FANS AND RECRUITS' FAMILIES!

AND USC WASN'T ON PROBATION AFTER GETTING HAMMERED WITH SANCTIONS WITH CERTAIN PEOPLE IN THE NCAA WANTING TO KILL THE PROGRAM FOR GOOD!

It's a brave new world, and all fans need to act accordingly. That means playing the NCAA's game, because we've seen what happens when a school doesn't.
