  • Some are very surprising. NAU, Vanderbilt and Duke stood out for me. Especially since I love Vandy so much.

  • It's actually a pretty flawed article. Many schools, including sc, don't report. And then the numbers reported are influenced by people coming forward, more of an article about who reports the most. So ucla whines the most? Sounds about right.

Some of the area surrounding Vanderbilt is rather questionable. Crime rate is also very high in Nashville...not as bad as Memphis, but bad.

  • I was really surprised by Northern Arizona. Only been through Flagstaff once and it was beautiful. But, it's been awhile.

Being from the Durham Area (Raleigh) Duke is the same situation as USC, as far as being surrounded by not so great neighborhoods. The difference being Duke doesn't look out for the community like USC does.

Then the Duke representative flat out lied to me and others when he came to Phoenix a few years ago. One of the things he pitched was how safe the campus was.

We had a local girl from Athens named Eve Carson murdered in cold blood a few years ago in Chapel Hill
She was UNC's Student Body President and a true superstar of a person
Brilliant scholar and someone who was loved by everyone who came in contact with her
    Truly limitless potential
They caught the scumbags who did it and they got life without parole
I am not a death penalty advocate, but if there was ever a case where it applied, it is this one
When she realized they were going to kill her she asked them to pray with her

Interesting. I'm just wondering where do you get that information USC doesn't report??? Did you see this somewhere or merely assuming?
The data collection is required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Higher Education Opportunity Act. USC has been reporting their campus crime incidents for years.

I understand some campuses, especially smaller ones without their own campus security rely directly on surrounding police and fire authorities and therefore some statistics can differentiate what is decided to report by them depending on prosecutions or convictions, etc, but this is not the case at USC.

  • Hmmm, wonder how this is determined? I realize being surrounded by the ghettos of Bel Aire, Brentwood, and Beverly Hills can be a daunting existence.

  • Sorry for the late reply, looked into it, then I've forgotten most of what I read. The gist of it is that the data was collected with the intention to monitor year to year crime, not region to region. This is explicitly stated in the outline of the program, the Uniform Crime Report.

There are two parties to which the data is relayed. The required party which you mentioned, though I am not sure if/how that can be requested. And the Uniform Crime Report whose data is used in this report, but reporting isn't required.

Individual reports here, though not directly comparable due to the data sources (SC is listed here):

  • USC is historically the safer campus. Which is another reason why mora's jab at the dead grad students who were close to a friend of mine made me so upset.
