247 team rankings are a joke

  • Rivals has USC at #5 - likely jump to #3 with next commitment
    Scout has USC at #4

    247 has USC at #13...

247 needs a new formula. They don't give enough weight to 5-star or even 4 stars.

i read somewhere each of them only includes a certain number of recruits in the final score, i.e. only the top 15 in the class are included in the score.
247 probably includes more recruits in the final score, so the more recruits, the higher the score

I think I may agree. But ultimately, Lane and Co. are mechanically evaluating each and every player that they extend and offer to and bring on board. So with our confidence is this kick-ass staff, I feel comfortable at whatever lower rank 247 rankings got us at. The majority of these kids are going to come in and straight up ball no matter the rankings.

You can actually talk directly to the CEO of this network. Imagine that!

It sounds like there is going to be a new 247 recruiting

team ranking product that will be released in the couple of weeks. Scott, do you know any of the details concerning this Wil

  • 247 TEAM rankings are NOT a joke, it's the PLAYER rankings.

247 has lower rankings for most of our commits than the other sites. Of the four major sites (ESPN, rivals, scout), 247 ranks each of these players the lowest in overall rankings on the top 247.

Hawkins, ranked #117, top 100 on the other 3 sites
Bigelow, ranked #14, top 10 on the other 3 sites
Hutchings, ranked #136, top 60 on the other 3 sites
Isaac, ranked #74, top 70 on the other 3 sites.
Davis, ranked #215, top 177 on the other 3 sites

There is nothing wrong with the 247 team rankings. Its their player rankings that seem to be disproportionately ranked against USC recruits.

But all those players you mentioned are still at least 4 stars and top 215 with 247, so it shouldn't really make that much of a difference in team rankings.

  • You have to love the sporting news rankings: They have Browne #1, Bigelow #4, Hutchings #5, and Isaac #6. With four of the top 6 players in the country, I hope their rankings turn out to be accurate!

  • Please post a picture of the recruiting trophy that is given out each year.
I am having a hard time remembering what it looks like...

Remember: none of the recruiting crap matters AT ALL the moment that first kicker puts his foot into the first kickoff of the year.

  • One reason I quit subscribing, and even visiting, the WeAreSC site is because of their affiliation with ESPN and their transparent bias toward the Southeast in general and against SC in particular. I like Garry, and believe the local affiliate is all SC, but they clearly had little influence over the parent. If this site follows that pattern, I'll soon be gone as well. I hope to be a long time subscriber here, but the rankings do seem skewed.

    I wish I could say it doesn't matter, but I can't.

I haven't done the analytics, but I suspect scout has our best team rating this year because it's the only major site where we have three of the top ten players.

You are mainly right that recruiting sites rankings aren't of paramount important in titles, but show me the last BCS AQ conference winner who perennially has poorly ranked recruiting?

Washington State, Iowa State, Michigan State , Mississippi State and NC State recruit poorly in football, and consequently almost always play poorly.

Honestly the ranking don't matter.. and they shouldn't matter.. WE know SC has one of the top classes in the Nation.. and I don't need some "ranking" to prove that to me!

So true TrojanzFreak...after all Will Derting was a two star (shot out to CougarDon) and I tell you that young man played some serious football for the Cougars--so ser-i-ous football!

    +1

One of the main factors in USC and Florida having some mediocre seasons recently wae that Pete and Urbie got caught up in winning the top recruiting slot every year

    It was stoopid

This staff was less than thrilled with the evaluations and data base they inherited from the old staff

They are doing things the wsy USC did them when Pete wss getting things going

Grunt work, thorough and based on what THEY see, not what a bunch of wannabes with agendas punch out on their keyboards

The fact 247 has a different criteria, or has things backed off at this time, this early, says a LOT about their philosophies

  • Of course poor classes year in and year out and a team will never be successful. But are we #1? #5? #15? Anything top fifteen, with solid coaching, is going to be able to position itself for a shot at a title. It's not like one site ranked us #50. It doesn't matter. Is the coaching staff getting the guys they have targeted? Most of the time. That's good enough to be competitive year in and year out. We'll be fine. I like it when we are under the radar.

I, for one, know our players are top I'd the line in terms of character and talent. I am just being repetitive of other more-reliable posters when I say that the ones that pick USC are the ones that are going to be the best. That school across town has to soft through the left-over clearance bin for talent. We are hand-picking...

  • I was really surprised when I looked at the rankings and didn't see you guys in the top 10. With the recruits you have committed so far, I figured you were there. All that matters is where they are ranked when they graduate. The higher that ranking, the better your chances of winning the NC.
