Defensive Changes Coming At USC?

Oregon started off the game on offense like a Nascar Champion and never took pedal off the metal en-route to a 62-51 butt-kicking of the Trojans at the Coliseum Saturday.

Marqise Lee

Marqise Lee had a jawdropping performance against the Ducks on Saturday and may be on his way to winning the Biletnikoff Award

Kenjon Barner rushed for more than 300 yards while gaining more yards than any running back ever had against the Trojans.

It was an offensive show Saturday and neither team played much defense.

Lane Kiffin, Matt Barkley, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee talked about the loss to the Ducks after the game in the interview room at the Coliseum.

FightOn247 was there to shoot video of the post-game presser.

    • Defensive changes cannot come soon enough.

Monte should stop with his darling zone scheme.

      A) The middle is always exploited. Two wide open TD passes tonight RIGHT DOWN BROADWAY. Oh, by the way, Washington and Zona did the SAME thing. Guess what? Everyone’s seen the film. Every team has at least two scores off of us down the pipe each game unless some serious changes are made.

      b) Run game. It’s not like Oregon is the first to run up our anus. It’s been happening since Stanford. Our defensive ends did not do the number one thing all game tonight: Contain! And then when they did, the middle, again, was wide open.

Clearly a defense that was supposedly built to stop Oregon did not stop Oregon, meaning that it’s the scheme that has to change. Period.

At least this will give guys our guys a chance; but what we got going on on D is shameful

      westcoastrules

    • Couple of Things;

      1) As you mentioned, the lack of containment tonight was abysmal. Oregon got the corner basically anytime they wanted it.

      2) Tackling...horrendous!!! I would guess the guys just got winded, and tired players do not tackle well.

      3) If I could add a 3rd...Auburn showed what quick and significant pressure straight up the middle does to spread teams like Oregon a couple of years ago in the BCS Championship Game...especially messing with timing of plays that these offenses truly depend on. The additions of Bigelow, Vanderdoes, and ??? will truly benefit the rotation inside against teams like this.

      tirebiter

    • I agree with what you are saying except for the for the fact that Bigelow and Vanderdoes are still birds in the bush until February.

    • Change is not coming before the end of the season. I don't care what Lane says

Monte won't change, the only change is when Lane finally lets him go and that's iffy at best.

Lane is playing with fire here...if the defense performs this bad the rest of the way he and Monte may be forced out if a change isn't made.

You should win a game when you score 51 points....but not with this defense.

      ParagonSC

    • I don't want to fire Lane, but if he doesn't want to fire his father, he needs to go also.

      usctrojanglory

    • To what scheme will they change to? It was said that Monte's scheme took a year to learn so how long to unlearn and move to something else? We have 3 games left in the regular season, a hopeful trip back up to Eugene and then a bowl game.

I agree that Monte needs to go and that Lane better make the call or he will find himself clearing out his office as well.

      GoForSC

    • Lane and Monte aren't going anywhere and both know it...at least until we're past the sanctions.

If Haden will keep CKO what do you think he'll do with M&L?

      jpltrojan1

    • It's time for a change on D. 3 years of this is enough.

      JayColgate

    • We don't have the talent to win consistently on the defensive side of the ball. The days of big linebacker built safeties are over you need very fast aggressive ball hawking safeties now days. Also we need to revert from using safeties at linebackers and get bigger & stronger in that position like the old days. We have caught some bad luck otherwise we would have the big strong linebackers missed on teo, jones who we let go for medical reasons & burficit. all three will not only play in the nfl but start.

    • I read how Lane congratulated Kenjon on his historic performance and Kenjon congratulated Lane for his dad defense helping him too it!

      Are you being serious?

    • What I found interesting is that Lane made several references to the three turnovers as key to why we lost and except for answering a question about the D, he said nothing. While I agree with that on the surface, how can you expect zero mistakes from your offense as the basis for a victory. The offense played lights out, but made 3 mistakes. The defense was non existent. We only stopped them once. It seemed like Lane was really avoiding any criticism of the defense. His only comment was a response to a question that indicated he doesn't know what to do. If he doesn't know what to do, then Monte must not know what to do.

    • I think we just saw two of the best offenses in the history of college football play. I am not sure we have a defense problem but rather great offenses - it is no secret that Redd, Barkley, Woods, and Lee will all be first round draft picks. USC is amazing.. I just can't figure out how you guys got beat by Arizona. If you play like you did last night, no one left on your schedule can touch you. Great game last night... A year ago everyone saw the defensive battle of the ages, last night they saw the offensive battle of the ages against two pretty good defenses.

    • You score 51 pints you have to win, defense should never allow more than 40 ad that is terrible. What defensive changes Scott? You didn't mention any?

Good point, GoforSC. I would say to simplify. In other words, let them focus on their cues and keys still, but allow their athleticism to come into play more instead of having them stick with the same tired scheme.

Simplify meaning no Monte scheme, but a general defense that others are running around the nation i.e. just make an adjustment that the players can handle and succeed in. What that is, I don’t know, but the coaches can surely make some change. It’s their job. Whatever that simplification is, I am sure the players could handle that change with their football IQ’s.

    • I have said it before, and will say it again. I would absolutely love for us to play a defensive style like Oregon St. They flat out attack the los, and let their corners play bump and run. They are doing it with athletes that would never even get a look at from USC. A defensive style like that coupled with USC athletes would be awesome.

    • Defenses have to change

    • of the fire monte crowd.....which one of you should get his job and what makes you the expert to know what should be done.

Sounds more like upset fans. I think oregon should fire belloti too he gave up 51. maybe we should switch

Yep it would except we are still trying to get the other corner spot tied down. Make the tackles that were there to make and this game is completely different. That is my take from watching it the second time.
